      Re: Intermitant connection failure

At this stage the issue could be either a Line fault or a Router problem. It is more likely to be a line issue though.

By establishing which socket is the master, and confirming that it is indeed the first socket, it may be possible to temporarily disconnect the other sockets. If this resolves the problem, then it is an internal wiring issue that is the responsibility of the OP, not their Line Provider.

If BTO were to come out and find that this is the problem, then the OP could be stung with a large bill for the call out.

Great, that is the master socket.

Is it possible for you to identify the wires and whether they come from outside or go to the extensions? If you can't, please post a photo that shows the cables coming from the wall clearly & the back of the master socket.

If you can do this, then gently pull out the wires to the extensions and check with a telephone that the extensions are indeed dead afterwards.

I would be inclined to leave it like this for a few days and to monitor the situation.

Also please post your stats once you have disconnected the extensions.

If there is a healthy improvement in the connection stats (not just the speed, but noise margin and perhaps the line attenuation) then I cannot recommend enough run-It-direct's advice to purchase an NTE5 socket, filtered faceplate and an IDC tool.

You will benefit from getting an IDC tool anyway as this will be needed when you replace the wires into the existing socket or the new filtered faceplate. If you do not have an IDC tool, an old credit card can be used, but please DO NOT use a screw driver.

A couple of IDC tools are available on run-IT-direct's web site. In your case I wouldn't recommend the disposable one as you have several extensions to add.

      Re: Intermitant connection failure

Hi, both cables back there just run out of the top of the socket back, I'm not sure which goes to the extensions so here is a pic, perhaps you can tell?

      Intermitant connection failure-imag0523.jpg

Well I would also like to mention that since the customer resolution team were involved this morning I haven't lost connection once. I'm not sure if it's coincidence but this is exactly what happened before, and what led me to believe it may be a problem at the exchange or else outside of my own equipment and wiring? Well to be honest whilst the connection holds I shan't attempt to alter the master socket but will certainly try it and report back here should the problem occur again (assuming we can work out which cables do what!).

      Re: Intermitant connection failure

First of all you need to disconnect all the wires connected to terminals 1, 3 and 4 on your master socket as these are unnecessary and could be interfering with your broadband. Then you might want to consider getting a XT-85 and seeing if you can replace your master socket with it.

You are very close to the exchange so I would like to imagine that once you fix your internal wiring you will be easily able to hit the full 20MB.

      Re: Intermitant connection failure

Once you have done what Exdee has suggested, you should also disconnect the same wires at the extension. Then you may want to try the following:

Connect two now unused pairs from the extension together and using a DVM (Digital Voltage Meter) or a battery & torch bulb to see which cable they are at the master socket.

This type of socket is OK for an extension, but it is not suitable for a master socket. This requires an NTE5, which contains the necessary arresters and capacitor..

Can you fit a nte5 into that housing?

      Re: Intermitant connection failure

I don't see why not, it is a standard plasterboard socket box. Just fitted one in my son's house and the engineer fitted an NTE5 to it with no complaint.
