Unhappy Having trouble getting full speed but neighbours are double our speed?

Hi folks, Im a complete noob when it comes to this kinda thing as Ive always lived in Places with only 1 Phone line input. But I have moved into a shared house and its driving me mad trying to get what we pay for on the net.

We have Sky unlimited package, live basically 100 metres from the exchange, both neighbours get 9mb and there is someone just had a BT net line put in thats 20mb!

The issue is we only get 4.6mb, this is all the time, even when its just me running a speed test with not another soul on.

Stuck using the old Netgear ADSL DG834GT.

Tbh it was at 2.5 until I rang sky (40mins!) and they upped the line. Its solved the drop out issue we had but its still not the connection I know we should be getting.

If anybody uses SKYgo then it renders it useless to anybody else!
Not sure what info to provide really as Im a noob. but here is some.

      Stats:
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 5792 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 252 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

      UpNp is On.

      Speed test results:
      Detailed Results
      Date 06/10/11 18:21:36
Download speed 4757.31 Kbps (4.65 Mbps)
Upload speed 207.47 Kbps (0.2 Mbps)

Any help would be great as SKY just keep telling me to find the main phone input, which im pretty certain it is, but if not Im stumped as to where it is as its a huge old building and following the cables into the building doesnt help.

Can you post your router stats from the second table of data from the following location:

      1. Maintenance
      2. Show Statistics

I'm sure you know the spiel about connection interference etc and line distance.

Also, how long have you been with Sky?

      George.

Re: Having trouble getting full speed but neighbours are double our speed?

Post your stats from the normal router position and from the Test socket, using only the ADSL cable supplied by Sky.
How to get your router statistics

How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

If you do not have an NTE5 socket as shown in the tutorial, remove everything you have plugged into the phone line from all sockets and plug the router only into the master socket.

      Here is the stats

      System Up Time 24:09:20
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 1345826 1698593 0 1435 14020 24:07:51
      LAN 10M/100M 1692047 1363731 0 14190 1711 24:09:17
      WLAN 11M/54M 104313 115636 0 299 122 24:09:09

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5792 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 db 8.1 db
Noise Margin 30.2 db 31.5 db

As mentioned I have no idea where the main input line is. I think it might be hidden behind a wall after a refirb, (Its a Pub building) and there is an extension running from it.

Re: Having trouble getting full speed but neighbours are double our speed?

Your line is very heavily capped. Phone Sky and insist that they either configure it manually or put DLM training on the line. If they refuse, tell them you want a manager or be passed to the higher support team. Tell them you are quite sure your line is capable of 20Mb.

In my house that line would be doing 24mbit (if the isp allowed it)

Phone sky and insist they put you on 20mbit down 1312 upstream
dont forget the upstream as alot of sky support set it too slow

Quite possibly there has been a fault on the line which caused DLM to reduce the speed. The fault appears to have been fixed, but DLM has not increased it again. This will have to be done manually.
