      sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi all

I am a newbie and recently joined the sky family approx in July. I have been having continous problems with the internet. The speeds just varies a lot and I am being told different things by different sky technicians. I have taken the face plate off and connected the router to the test socket but things arent helping. An engineer was sent out to our house a couple weeks ago to check the phone lines and things where fine and he told me that the line should be able to hold around 4.7meg and then sky was able to put me up to 5meg.

Recently the speeds keeps dropping and now i have been advised that my line can only handle 2meg and that they would fix it as that
....is it true that i can only get 2? Also i heard that BT infinity will be available around dec and I am really not sure what to do. Can I cancel due to these continous problems?

      here are the basic stats:

my attenuation is 48.5db and i sync at around 6.2Mbit on G.DMT, presumably your attenuation is for ADSL2+ so you should be getting more tyhan me thats for sure

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

You are currently on standard ADSL1.

The noise margins are quite high and could be an indication that DLM has found a problem and decreased your connection speed.

Since you have stated that you are using the test socket (the socket behind the faceplate) and have already had BTO visit, I would be inclined to call Sky again to see if they can arrange for another visit.

As for FTTC, there is a very important issue that needs to be realised before you can consider this: BTO needs to install a new green street cabinet near to your home. They are currently only installing enough to cover between 20-80% of any local population.

Looking out the window I can see a large flock of Pigs circling. This could mean that Sky will be launching a set of Fibre products soon. As and when this happens, you may be able to jump across to FTTC.

At this time we have no details of prices, bandwidth limits or launch date.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

You present stats indicate that your line could carry 7-8Mb, but for some reason Sky are unable to stabilise it at that. It looks like you may have an intermittent fault which is very difficult to trace. I suggest you download and run Routerstats Lite for a couple of days. This will enable you to track your noise margin over a period and maybe enable you to narrow down the reason for the poor performance.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi.

I just want to say thank you to all those that replied. I just got in from work and decided to check on the speed today......
      here are the stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 672 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 dB 31.5 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 16.0 dB

I was actually quite shocked to see the speed. I was told by the sky woman to wait for her to call me on friday to see how the speed has gone but its getting to the point where I cant take it anymore. Is there anything i should say to sky except for the fact that the speed is ridiculously slow. Should i tell them to arrange an engineer or something??

I just want to thank you all again. I really appreciate help.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

I think your latest stats confirm my suspicion that there is a fault on your line. Call whoever you pay your rental to and tell them you have intermitent noise on your line, can they send out an engineer to check it.

Just to be absolutely sure, plug into your Test socket and check the stats there. This is advised as if the fault is in your internal wiring you are liable to be charged. If it is present in the Test socket, it is external to your property and you have nothing to worry about.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi

Just thought il give an update on the situation with the internet. Well I called up sky and was told that I will have to wait 72 hours to speak to tier 2 technical team to resolve the issue. I was told to restart the router and here are the stat:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.5 dB 25.5 dB
Noise Margin 11.4 dB 16.0 dB

the speed has gone back up but I cant always go restart the router?!
So if i speak to the tier 2 technical team. If there anything I should tell them to do or fix?

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Well just another update...
spoke to sky tech and she made me take everything apart. and the speed jumped up...here are my new stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 dB 30.0 dB
Noise Margin 9.2 dB 16.0 dB

the internet has just gone funny and here are the new stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2944 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.5 dB 30.5 dB
Noise Margin 3.9 dB 12.0 dB

then it stopped, reconnected and went back to this after 2mins:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 dB 30.0 dB
Noise Margin 11.4 dB 16.0 dB

the thing is, the woman herself has no idea why the speed has gone up? its all very strange. the woman also said she will call me tomorrow and if the line stablises she can possible increase the speed? is it going to be safe to do so? I am just very confused with everything. does anyone know why?

Really appreciate all the help in advance!

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

Ok, it looks like there is an issue with your telephone line.

Starting with the simplest test first...

Using a corded telephone, could you plug it into the test socket, dial '1' and listen for any noise please?

Can you also monitor to see if there is any pattern to when the speeds drop. Examples to look for are:

      • passing traffic
      • strong wind
      • rain
      • time of the day (street lights, traffic signals, faulty TVs being used by neighbours)

Download and install RouterStats Lite. If you can set it up to run and monitor your connection, you may be able to spot any patterns more easily.

Another good tool is the one written by mrmt32. Check out his thread:

      Sky router tool

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
