      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi everyone.

Well I had a BT openreach engineer come out today. He couldnt find any faults at home so he went to the exhange or the cabinet or something and called me and said he thinks he has resolved the problem:

      The stats are here:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3068 kbps 253 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 dB 21.4 dB
Noise Margin 12.1 dB 19.5 dB

it has remained quite stable so far and hope it does in the long run but just wanted to ask people whether my line can hold a higher speed? is there anything to say?

      Thanks

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

I looks like that BTO Engineer has done a very nice job.

The Line Attenuation has dropped, which is excellent as this means your line should now support even better speeds than the previous figure indicated. Unfortunately it is still high, so you won't get blistering speeds though.

I would give Sky a friendly call, explain that he has been out to repair your line and ask that they uncap your connection as it should not support a much better connection speed.

Please do post the results as some do make a better job than others. Also try to avoid being placed on DLM again as you should be entitled to a manual configuration.

Do keep us apprised of what happens over the next couple of weeks too, just in case you have line issues again.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi

I just rang sky and spoke to someone from the CST. I told him that the engineer fixed the fault and politely asked the guy to up the speed. He didnt even check the report and instead asked me what the problem was! And here are the stats so far:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7478 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 dB 21.4 dB
Noise Margin 6.4 dB 19.1 dB

I am really happy that the speed has doubled and was told that there is a possibilty to increase the speed further but advised that I should give this speed a trial for a couple of days? I mean i am really happy with the speed but just worried that it might drop again Would this speed be stable on my line? Anything that I need to look out for? I have the noticed that the noise margin have been fluctuating abit but nothing too significant. If it does remain stable should I ring up and ask......(if i dont ask i wont get).

Anyway,I really appreciate all the help from you guys especially Scubbie.
Hopefully the speed will maintain as it is!!
And if anything funny happens i will be back on here!!
Il keep you guys updated over the next couple of days.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

When you get a chance, call again.

He has left your upload speed restricted, which is one reason why we ask people to post their stats after such a change.

You should be able to get a little more out of both the downstream & upstream speeds because of the issues with the noise margin on the downstream.

As for the help, no problem. If it wasn't for the others I wouldn't know what I do with regards to a lot of small details. I just try to word things differently.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Hi!

Will try give sky a ring as the CST gave me their direct number and see if they can up the upstream. Just got a quick question though. I have noticed that the noise margin has decreased and now it has maintained about 5dB? Is this normal? the lowest iv had so far was 4.9dB, but like i said it staying around the region of 5.4dB for a good few hours now. I dont know if i am being paranoid about it!

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7478 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 dB 21.4 dB
Noise Margin 5.3 dB 19.0 dB

what does it mean when it gets this low?
      Would it go any lower?
is there still the possibility for improving the downstream speed?
How do i know if the line is stable?

Sorry for all the questions! Just want to understand more about the techy side of the internet!

The speed normally tends to drop in the morning so im hoping for the best when i wake up tomorrow!

      thanks again!

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

It is normal for the noise margin to drop a little at night, but that drop is not so good.

I would perhaps take a look in the morning and give Sky a call then rather than this late in the day.

I did try to post the response earlier this evening, but the server was playing up.

That usually means the noise on the line during the night is causing the connection to drop and reconnect at a lower speed. Check your WAN uptime, if it is only a few hours, this is what is happening.

      Re: sky BB help!!!!!

      Good morning everyone!

Well I just check the stats this morning and noticed that the speed remained the same for once!!!! woohoo! The WAN time says it has been up for 19 hours which seems to be right because the BTO engineer came yesterday to fixed the fault. Its a good sign right?

The noise margin did go back up slightly this morning and here are the stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7478 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 dB 21.4 dB
Noise Margin 6.4 dB 19.2 dB

is it back to normal again or is it still abit low?
What should the noise margin be around usually??
do i ring and tell them to bring the speed down or something?

      Thanks again
