      Sudden Speed / Sync Issues

      Hello,

I previously connected to my Sky BB at 17021kbps, and 972kbps up no problems at all and the connection was always solid as a rock - has been for months, and months, and months.

I have however been away from three days and now I've come back my router (Netgear DGN2000 but had the same issue on the sky Sagem 2504) appears to be struggling to sync at all, and certainly not at a comparable speed.

Below is a log of what happened in the space of about 15 minutes with my connection. A series of connections and disconnections. All stats taken from the test socket btw.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

Line Attenuation 22.5 db 10.2 db
Noise Margin 12.4 db 21.5 db

It has now settled, stably for now, on :

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 13625 kbps 474 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 10.2 db
Noise Margin 13.6 db 22.0 db

Which is obviously much less than before.

Could anyone give me a clue as to why I've seemingly lost so much speed (4MB or so) please? And then how I can get it back?

      Many kind thanks in advance.

      Dave

Further to this - I've noticed my noise margins have increased from around 7db to 13 and 22 respectively. Why would this suddenly happen?

Re: Sudden Speed / Sync Issues

Looking through your list of stats it appears your line has had some sort of problem. It could have been engineers working on a line close to your which has caused some interference. As you say, it now seems to have settled. Power cycle your router by switching it off for a minute then back on again. If your speed does not recover it probably means DLM has capped it due to the instability. This being the case, call Sky, tell them your line had a problem which is now fixed, can they put your speed back up where it should be.

Re: Sudden Speed / Sync Issues

      Cheers for the reply

I've been in touch with Sky who suggested swapping the microfilter which I have duly done.

      My connection is now :

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16957 kbps 732 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 10.0 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 9.5 db

...but it's dropped 3 times since, when the noise margin suddenly dropped to 0db and then back up again in the space of about 30 seconds.

      Odd, and annoying.

Re: Sudden Speed / Sync Issues

If you have a Test socket, try plugging the router it into that. If you can, then run it for a while with nothing else connected. That will rule out a filter problem. Filters only stop anything connected to your phone line interfering with the router and vice versa. If there is nothing connected, you don't even need a filter.

It is also possible you are suffering from REIN interference. You can read about that in this article by Kitz,
      ::. Kitz - REIN .::

You might also want to download and run Routerstats Lite, this will show when your noise margin is dropping and may give a clue to the cause.

Re: Sudden Speed / Sync Issues

Thanks for all of the help

I'm using the test socket with no other device plugged in. I'm also using new telephone socket to modem cable and a new microfilter.

This issue is still ongoing - I've just re-reported it to Sky.

There is much less fluctuation in my noise figures now but I'm still suffering from at least 1 disconnection per hour on average.

      Current stats are Noise Margin= 5.4, Sync Speed= 14259, Upstream NM= 5.5.

Previously Sky explained this could be a router issue. But it happens with my non-Sky DGN2000 too.
