      XP Firewall vanishes Internet Connection

After turning XP Firewall back on , the Internet Connection in the Internet Gateway section became disabled and would not re-enable. But the internet did work. Then after reboot, it disappeared altogether though internet still worked.

Is there a setting I need to change to stop this happening? I know feeling is mixed on whether to rely solely on the router's firewall.

Seems it was just concidence that I switched the firewall on and the connection disappeared.

What happens is when the connection is not there a router reboot returns it but then computer reboot loses it again.

Anyone else experienced this? Probably not too important as I can still access the net OK but I do like the reassurance of seeing the tray icon telling me I have connected.

That is normal behaviour it will only be shown when there is an active link between the PC and the router, the only ones that I have noticed that stay there but have a red x in them are the wireless ones.

Yes that is what I mean - it is not there (apart from after a router reboot but then only until PC reboot) whilst there is an active connection. I'm not talking about the Local Area Connection icon - that is there and works fine and does get a red cross when router is off.

I'm talking about the Internet Connection icon which comes on (or not now in my case) to tell you that you are connected to the internet and what speed you have synched at.

You could choose to make the icon display in the tray or not but whatever you chose it would still appear in a section of Internet Connections called "Internet Gateway".

Now mine is not there any more after PC reboot.

Sorry I have never had anything but the Local Area Connection icon on my task bar which tells me all I need to know.

The only time I see Internet Connection icon is if i have to use my modem and not used that for how knows how long.

I think this is another problem with the netgear router, as the internet connection gateway icon relies on UpNP working correctly, mine used to appear then would disappear until i rebooted the router with the pc switched on, but sometimes would not come back unless i clicked the shortcut in my network places. I'm now using my linksys router and the gateway icon is always in my system tray.
