New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

I recently switched from BT to Sky for my telephone and broadband, have nearly completed my 10 days DLM (tomorrow I think) and the speed is a little higher than what I had from BT (2mb to 3mb) but Sky told me I should be able to achieve between 4.2mb and 17mb.
Is anyone able to tell me whether the speed I have is probably the most I should expect or should I give Sky a call and ask for a little assistance?
I have attached my router stats if that helps

Can you plug into your Test socket using only the cable supplied by Sky and post your stats from there please.
How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

4.2 to 17Mb is a very wide range, Sky would not normally give out something like this. They will usually underestimate the speed. This suggests you may have a problem with your line. As things stand, you will probably loose speed, rather than gain any.

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

The way things look at the moment, you will not get anything close to the 17Mb connection.

Your Line Attenuation is very high.

This indicates that either your telephone line is very long or there is something interfering with the signal strength.

The first things to look at would be to ensure that you are getting the best from your connection. Could you plug your router into your Test Socket and post the stats from there please?

Use only a microfilter, the grey ADSL lead and the Sky router to check this.

If you do not have a test socket, then could you describe the set up for your telephone system please.

Edit: Ok we've both said more or less the same

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

Sorry.. just logged into my Sky account and it says that they estimated between 4.9Mbps - 11.2Mbps (not 17Mbps!) - have connected into my test socket but not much of a speed bump.
My account also says that line testing was completed on 06/09 and its been set to 4.0Mbps.
New router stats attached - line attenuation still looks really high?

Thanks again for all the help!

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

Whilst it is still high, it has dropped from 57 to 56dB.

The downstream noise margin have also increased, meaning that you have a little room for improvement on the speed increase that you achieved as well.

Conclusion: Something in your home telephone wiring was holding your connection back.

There are a couple of choices to make now. You could fit a filtered faceplate, cut the bell wire or do nothing.

Please take a look at this page:

::. Kitz - Improve your adsl connection speed .::

I would also recommend that you take a look at your telephone line from the test socket to the outside. There may be a BT Junction Box. This may be a little dated, along with the wiring.

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

The speed has increase as has your noise margin, which suggests you internal wiring is interfering with the ADSL signal. With an attenuation in the 50s, I am at a loss why Sky should even mention 11Mb. You might get a bit more if the line mode was changed to G.DMT(ADSL1), try phoning Sky and ask them if they can try your line on that mode. You are not likely to get much more, 4-5Mb is about normal on your attenuation.

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

Cheers guys, will look at either a faceplate or cutting the bell wire- I'm in a block of flats which is only a few years old so I wouldn't think the wiring is too dated.
Think I'll be satisfied with what I'm getting- if I can get to about 3.5Mb then its nearly double than I was getting with BT, and it sounds like 4Mb might be the max I can get- might see what Sky can do, they did state if it was significantly lower (3.8MB or less) to contact them

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

Flats are notoriously bad for broadband.

Most members who have reported issues do not have the BT NTE5 telephone socket, so are unable to gain access to the test socket.

The wiring also can be a nightmare to replace if it goes though the centre of the building.

Once DLM has completed, post your stats and it might be that we'll suggest calling Sky to see if they can place you on standard ADSL (G.DMT) as Tom has suggested.

You are in the area where you may get a better connection speed with ADSL, rather than ADSL2+.

Re: New Sky connection- DLM nearly complete

Heard nothing but bad things for flats and broadband, I would have thought a new build would be set up better as well!
The test socket is in the bedroom for some strange reason, and all the other sockets are built into an all-in-one plate on the wall with telephone and power sockets.
Will give it a few more days and repost to see if anyone has any suggestions.. thanks for all the assistance!
