With the current economic climate, most builders are going to be even more keen to cut costs.

Good quality telephone cable is not going to help them. If they can get away with using cheap telephone cables, then they will, and do.

All too often they don't use the NTE5 socket, but rather a simpler Master Socket without the split faceplate.

If your extensions are near to electrical points, there is a possibility that the could be electrical noise getting to the line as well. Whilst you may not hear this noise, it too can interfere with the broadband signal.

A ferrite ring might help to reduce this noise, if you have a suitable one to hand. One that can split would be very useful as it means that you do not need to disconnect the telephone line. The following link shows what I mean, other versions are available for less money:

The test socket is in the bedroom for some strange reason, and all the other sockets are built into an all-in-one plate on the wall with telephone and power sockets.
That is a good thing in a way, it is probably because NTE5 boxes are not obtainable as a multi socket, which are used in the more public areas of a dwelling. It does give you the opportunity to test your full potential.
