So, it looks like Sky is blocking Mediafire.com!

      Hello,

From what I can see this is the case. A quick google search for the error mediafire returns shows that this problem is isolated to sky broadband users.

      example:
Mediafire Only Down For Me. - DuncsWeb

also a quick search on twitter will give the same results.

So what does Sky think they're doing? No bills have been passed that I know of and many of us use this website for business/education file sharing. At least I do anyway.

Are Sky going to admit to this or is this possibly some kind of fault on their end that just happens to block one website? (not likely)

When something like this happens it is normally due to the IWF placing the website onto their black list. Sky follow their suggestions, so if the website contains any flagged material (normally child sex abuse) then the site gets blocked until the offending material is removed and the IWF give the go ahead.

All ISP's who have signed up to the IWF have all their traffic flowing through a transparent proxy. As indefatigable has already explained this is where the blocking happens. Your ISP has nothing to do with it.

Here are a few websites which can be used to check if IWF is blocking your access to the websites you are trying to visit:

      - UK Censorship Checker
      - http://apcyberax.co.uk/iwfchecker/

The second link checks the status on Virgin Media but IWF does not have different block lists for different ISPs so anything on that website is being watched by IWF. Please note you might be able to access some of the websites on the list but they are still being watched/throttled by IWF.

Just checked it and have seen that Mediafire is at the top of the list. So as Exdee has stated until such time the offending material is removed it will continue to be blocked

Angry Re: So, it looks like Sky is blocking Mediafire.com!

It's giving a 404 error for me at the moment. Very annoying since I use this service for perfectly legitimate reasons anyway. I'm starting to get a bit tired of the IWF and their arbitrary censorship...

Anyway, if it's being blocked by anyone else, you can easily get around it using the kproxy.com service...

I've logged this as a complaint with Sky anyway, and quoted this letter:

      Hello,

Thank you for contacting Mediafire. We are currently facing the same complaint with the IWF in the UK. We became aware of this issue Friday morning and sent an inquiry to our contact as soon as we were notified. Because it was a Friday and due to the time difference between our location in the United States and our contacts locations in the United Kingdom, we were faced with the problem not being addressed until Monday. This is an issue that is only affecting Sky Broadband customers at this time, which they are unwilling to acknowledge according to one of our Mediafire customers. I would recommend that you contact them and complain, noting the error that you are receiving whenever you attempt to access our website. We are in the process of working with all parties to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

We have just been notified by our contact that they have made Sky Broadband aware of the issue and we are hoping for a speedy resolve to the problem. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience that it is causing to both you and your clients in the meantime, as we value our UK Mediafire clients.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.

Re: So, it looks like Sky is blocking Mediafire.com!

The IWF are nothing but a bunch of idiots (I just told them so in a letter), existing only to annoy regular internet users...

And yes, their useless blocks are completely ineffective because of VPNs, proxies etc. etc...
