does this sound like a dos attack?

hi i woke up this morning and tried to go online and relised webpage were really slow, i just thought it was the normal or maybe my samknows router was checking my speed, so i thought nothing of it, then about an hour ago my cousin came over and tried to play some online games, and as soon as he loged in to his game he would be greeted with "connection error" this got me wondering.
so i loged into my sky router and on security tab under logs there where around 20+ logs stating DOS...
if im correct DOS stands for Denial Of Service.
i then rebooted my router to obtain a new ip and the logs seemed to disappear.

edit: and another thing why does my router clear logs but it stats some random logs from 2002 even though we neva had sky in 2002 :S

can anyone confirm this is what i believe it was? and if so is there anything i can do?

Re: does this sound like a dos attack?

It is possible that you were subjected to a DDOS attack. By switching the router off & back on again, you have been able to change your Internet IP Address.

The router does not retain the logs once you have powered it off. Actually most routers work like this too.

The reason for the date is because when the router first starts this is the date that it will pick up. Once the router has been able to synchronise with an on-line clock, the date & time will be changed to the correct details.

Re: does this sound like a dos attack?

yep seems very much like a DDoS attack
i logged into my samknows router and the day of the slow speeds i had 20-29% packets lost where as normal this is 0(since i got the router till now), even now it is 0.
ahh well i dunno what else i can do except maybe only allocate ip's for the things in my home and disallow any new DHCP

Re: does this sound like a dos attack?

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it for now.

There are too many people out there who don't secure their computers. This allows hidden bots to be downloaded and in turn they can target IP addresses across the Internet.

It was possibly a random attack and they will be having a go at someone else now.

Until it becomes a criminal offence to not secure your computer when connected to the Internet, people just are not going to care.

this is about 1/100th of the logs
the logs filled up 34 pages on windows, and thats just the logs that were shown, since the router does not keep the logs perm.

      so what do you think?

      edit:
i tried going to the destination ip, and it asks me to log into what looks like my router, still i would rather ask than just leave it alone.

Re: does this sound like a dos attack?

The destination IP is your IP address. Make a note of it and switch your router off for a full night. This usually guarantees that you will get a new IP address, check that you have one. Rebooting your router does not mean you get a new address, but it does clear the previous log, so there is a good chance you have the same address.

It would be very unusual to get a DOS attack on a private router, it is more likely to be P2P or torrents traffic.

You should also go to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and check that your router is secure.

Re: does this sound like a dos attack?

Thinking about this a little more, could you check through some of the following please?:

      • Turn off 'respond to Ping'
      • Run various scanners to ensure that you do not have any nasties on your computers (i.e. Adaware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, AdvancedSystem Care, AV Scanner, On-Line AV Scanner(Panda Software used to do an excellent on-line scanner))

If you have any Torrent Software installed, could you Exit it please? I have found that Torrent software is a common source of my DDoS attacks which is why I have mentioned it.

You have something that is using ports 58718 & 48088. Which is why I believe that either yourself or someone else on your LAN is using torrents.

If no one in your household is using Torrents, the there are two other potential sources to check:

      • WiFi
      • HomePlug or PowerLine Adaptors

It is possible that someone has gained access to your LAN. They may be listed on the router on the page entitled 'Attached Devices'.
