      Speed seems very low

We've had Sky Broadband Unlimited for several weeks and our line speed has been consistently low - around 2.7 Mb/s. Before we signed up Sky suggested that our line should achieve 10-15 Mb.

Could anyone help by looking at the stats we're getting and suggesting if we should be getting better speeds and how we should go about getting them?

The router is plugged into a microfilter plugged into the master socket on the original network cable supplied by Sky. We don't have any other active phone sockets.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4085 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 16.5 dB 10.0 dB

      System Up Time: 215:32:10
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 28287 32483 0 4933116 23055322 0:54:02

      WLAN Up 7698718 6224890 0 1855345972 2147483647 215:31:51

      Really grateful for any help.

      Re: Speed seems very low

You should be touching 20MB with that line.
Post your router stats from your test socket.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

How many sockets have you got?
Have you got Sky TV? If yes is your Sky box connected to your phone line?

      Re: Speed seems very low

Please post your stats again from the test socket as Exdee has suggested. Your Line Attenuation indicated that you should have, as he has pointed out, somewhere in the region of 20,000kbps downstream connection.

I thought that I would emphasise this part of your stats. So many others don't post it, but it does indicate that your connection was dropped about 55 minutes before taking the stats.

Do you experience frequent disconnections at all or was you doing something else about then?

Examples include using your telephone, knocking the socket that the router is plugged into. Both of these are innocent, but may help to diagnose the problem.

      Other things to check:

Can you perform a 'quiet line test' please?

Using a corded telephone, dial '1' and listen carefully for any noise on the line.

      Re: Speed seems very low

      Thanks for taking a look.

These are the stats from the test socket:
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 822 1046 0 110508 65677 0:03:04
      LAN Up 6623 5654 0 1268773 1466555 0:04:06
      WLAN Up 2491 1706 0 1192447 231126 0:03:47

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 16.5 dB 9.7 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 9.0 dB

The only working socket is the master socket - it was freshly installed by Openreach at the start of May.

We have Sky TV and the box is connected to the phone line.

The first thing connected to the master socket should be the micro-filter. The splitter should be connected to the telephone port on the micro-filter with one wire leading to the Sky box and one wire leading to your phone. The dsl cable should be connected to the dsl port on the micro-filter.

Can you make sure that your setup is right?

If you had the splitter plugged in before the micro-filter, correct this and repost your stats.

      Thanks Exdee

The micro-filter is the first thing connected to the master socket and the set-up is as you have described.

      Re: Speed seems very low

Ring sky and tell them your broadband speed is way lower then the estimates you were given when you signed up.

Hopefully they will go through the normal trouble shooting steps and book an engineer to come and fix whatever the problem is. Don't take no for an answer. Be persistent.

      Re: Speed seems very low

I see that there has been no further comment on the drop in the connection I made in post #3.

It is important to realise that this could indicate a line problem.

If there is a line problem, then this will explain why you have such a poor connection.

      Hi Scuddie

thanks for the message. I haven't got a corded telephone so I can't do a quiet line test, but I haven't noticed frequent dropped connections.

Is there anything else I should look out for?

      Re: Speed seems very low

Unplug everything except the router, change the filter and take your stats. If your noise margin does not rise substantially, that means you have a fault on the line or a faulty router. If you have another router, plug that in and take the stats. If you get the same result. that points directly at your line or a problem in the exchange.
