      Slow connection speed

      Hi,

My line distance is 4 km and my nieghbours are getting around 6Mbps speeds, which is what various websites say i should be getting. I am only getting 1.5Mbps. I have phoned sky but they didn't give any useful information, said 1.5Mbps was the limit. Please help. I have posted my stats below:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1532 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 57 db 22 db
Noise Margin 8 db 9 db

      Thanks

Post your stats from the Test socket using only the filter and cable supplied by Sky.
How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

Please check when the faceplate is off that you do not have dial tone on any of your extensions, should you have any.

      Re: Slow connection speed

      Hi qwgg,

I'm about 2.2km from my exchange and recently my connection has become almost identical to yours, even from the master socket:

      Connection 1531 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 51 db 32 db
Noise Margin 7 db 10 db

I asked Sky to re-profile my line but they keep saying their computer says this is as fast as I can get, even though I was getting faster before and got 4000ish with BT in 2006. Have now escalated this to their customer service team to find out what is going on.

      Re: Slow connection speed

When you were with BT, you were probably on ADSLMax which has a different way or calculating the attenuation on your line. My best guess is on ADSLMax you had 48-49dB downstream attenuation and that's why you got around 4meg.

I do agree you are getting slower than you should though - you should be getting at least a 2.5-3meg sync on your connection (If it doesn't have too many errors).

      Re: Slow connection speed

      Thanks for replying,

These are my stats using the test socket:

Connection Speed 1537 kbps 795 kbps
Line Attenuation 57 db 22 db
Noise Margin 7 db 9 db

Almost identical. I checked all extensions when the face plate was off and they didn't have a dail tone. Should I ask BT about their external wiring, as it seems the internal wiring is okay? (Is using the test socket a measure of the internal wiring)?

      Thanks

The attenuation has little to do with it, it is the line mode that makes the difference. On BT it would be on G.DMT, whereas it is now on ADSL2+. Bt will do nothing for you for broadband problems, unless you have a noisy line, it is a waste of time calling them, they will just refer you back to Sky. Call Sky and ask them to check your line and also ask them to try your line on G.DMT as it often performs better on long lines such as yours.
