I have an ASDL filter plugged in-to the master socket. The broadband cable runs from the filter behind skirting boards and in-to the router. It travels 12-15 ft away.
So you have a long ADSL cable plugged into the filter going to the socket. That's OK provided it is good quality twisted pair cable. If it is flat telephone extension type cable, you could be loosing out.

I was trying to establish if you have any fixed telephone sockets, if you don't have any, then you don't have to bother struggling to get the faceplate off the master socket, as that is the only reason for removing the faceplate. There is a chance that the faceplate its self is faulty, but the chances of that are very small.

Sorry for being such an idiot, but what do you mean by having any 'fixed telephone sockets'? The only socket I have is the one I detailed

The cable I use looks pretty worn out, but it definitely isn't a flat cable. Although I will be using a new broadband cable that came with the router when the router is moved.

Fixed sockets are boxes fixed to the wall, which look like the master socket or a bit smaller, which are connected to the master socket. If you have only one socket then you don't have any

Right, so without needing to do any of the other things, what else can I do to determine the problem? Any suggestions?

You could call Sky and ask them to put your line on G.DMT (ADSL1). That may help.
