      0.4mbps download ?

      Hello all,

Thought I would try this forum before phoning sky directly, as it seems to be more useful!

Basically I had sky broadband unlimited in my old house, all worked fine with no issues, have just moved house, had BT install a new line and had Sky broadband unlimited activated over 10 days ago now, I waited 10 days for the line test to complete and now if I logon to sky it states a download speed of 0.4mbps and 0.8mbps upload. The internet is basically unusable at this speed, sky have quoted a speed of between 10 and 20 meg

My router is connected directly to the main socket in the house as installed by BT, have tried several different microfilters etc and simply can't get a decent speed, is this something to do with Sky or BT?

I have attached my router statistics. Any advice on who to pester first would be great?

      Cheers, Steve

Your stats are very poor, do you have a TEST socket? If so, connect to that and get the stats again.

How many phone sockets are there in the property? Do you have an alarm connected to the phone line?

      Hi Smithy99,

I dont have a test socket, I am in a flat, a new build infact. There are 3 phone sockets in the property, but only the socket next to the front door is live, theres no alarm connected either. Is this a BT issue (who I pay line rental too).

      Re: 0.4mbps download ?

Your connection is showing a very low speed at present.

Could I ask whether you are have anything else plugged into the same BT socket?

A common issue, for example, it for the Sky STB telephone lead to be plugged in first. This must be plugged into the telephone socket on the microfilter, despite the words of warning on the side of the splitter.

Flats are notoriously problematic. The wiring from the main junction to your flat is often not the best quality.

Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Nothing else is plugged in, not even the STB. Is it worth phoning BT first to try and sort this out?

      Re: 0.4mbps download ?

Your line provider (whom ever you pay your line rental to)is responsible for the telephone line between the exchange and your master socket.

Flats are often responsible for very poor results. Yours are considerable worse than normal.

I would be inclined to ask others in the same block of flats as you to find out what kind of speeds they have.

It might be that the line between the junction box on the ground floor and your flat is incorrectly wired. I don't know whom would be responsible for changing this.

Thanks Scubbie, I will call BT and ask them first and see what they have to say, the line was only installed about 2 weeks ago when the engineer came, pain in the ****!

but only the socket next to the front door is live
Can you unscrew the faceplate and check that only 2 wires are connected, one to the No.2 and one to the No.5 terminals on the back of the plate?
