      Re: Finally got connected today

Had a look today at 'my broadband' page it said line training had finished and was set at 8Mb down and 0.8 up. The router had not re-synced for over 110 hours and had only re-synced once since line training had started, which was at 8192 down and 796 up. I phoned Sky up and told them this, went through all the usual stuff, even though I told them router was connected to the test socket and I had been syncing at over 16000 with o2, they even made me change the filter, in the end they re-synced the line and said they had taken DLM off. My stats are now:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15280 kbps 902 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 dB 17.4 dB
Noise Margin 7.2 dB 8.0 dB

Slightly slower than o2 but a lot cheaper!

So DLM only lasted a few days with you, correct?

That's not too bad a speed for your attenuation.

DLM does vary in how long it take to set up a line. Whilst the official line is that it can take up to 10 days, it can be as short as two or three days and it could last as long as 20 days.

Since it is computer controlled and down to an individual installation, we don't have the means to predict just how long one line may take.

The weird thing is when I called sky a couple of days ago and ask about DLM and the gaming profile, they said to call back after the 26th cause thats when DLM would be done.

So the only way to know if DLM is done is through the MySky page or calling sky directly?

      Yep.

You can look at the up-time on your router. When DLM is running it will reset the WAN time between the hours of 1am-6am. It has been known to leave it for a few days & restart though.

Yes, it started on the 10th and finished on the 13th but only re-synced once during the testing, which was on the 10th when it went from 4095 to 8191.

I've now moved my router away from the test socket due to it being a trip hazard, I've connected it to a filtered face plate about 30ft from the main BT socket but the strange thing was that it connected at a higher sync - 15628 up and 928 down, with the same attenuation and noise margin. I was made up until I accidentally switched off the extension lead the router was plugged into, now it's gone to this:

Connection Speed 15204 kbps 884 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 dB 17.5 dB
Noise Margin 7.9 dB 8.5 dB

If I leave it for a few days and disconnect / connect do you think it will rise again? I know it's not much but I'd like to get as close to what I was getting with o2.

Like yazeez I also asked about the gaming profile but they were very reluctant and advised me not to go on it, I think the advisor thought because I'd just had a significant speed increase I was being a bit greedy! I thought I'd give it a few weeks to see how the connection holds up before ringing back, plus I'm not even sure what it is!

      Re: Finally got connected today

Turning off a router doesn't normally have a huge effect on your connection speed.

There is the issue over when you turn the router on or off in respect of the time of day though. I can never remember which way around, but essentially if you reset the router either in the evening or the morning it will get a slightly different noise margin and sync at a different speed as a result.

      Re: Finally got connected today

Thanks for the reply. I've just checked the noise margin it was 8.1 down 8.5 up so I turned the router off and now the stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15782 kbps 916 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.5 dB 17.5 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 8.0 dB

which is the best yet, just now need to see if it stays stable....

      Re: Finally got connected today

For both of you, it's good to see your connections improving.

I'm not sure if Gitfinger's will remain as fast. Normally it is always best in the test socket, but unless you can figure out how to avoid it being a trip hazard, then you'll have to leave it where it is.

As for yazeez, you should be able to attain 20,000+ kbps on your connection. Perhaps something weird is happening as the speed continues to improve, but your noise margin remains around 7dB.
