New Sky User (well, ordered tonight!)

This is a discussion on New Sky User (well, ordered tonight!) within the Sky Broadband help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Looks very good. You should get a sync speed of around 16-17meg, perhaps a shade more....

Before reading any further, please do sit down and remain calm...

Connection Speed 4095 kbps 605 kbps
      Line Attenuation 26.5db 15.3db
      Noise Margin 15.9db 17.2db
Using the tool on this site shows us what you may be capable of with you line attenuation:

We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

This is dependant on many factors, such as the quality of your line (no breaks, etc.) and the quality of any internal wiring if you don't have a filtered faceplate.

Do ensure that you continue to use the short grey ADSL lead supplied by Sky with the router.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

16MB to 24MB with that attenuation?

The site tool needs to be fixed.

      lol - I know!

In reality I would expect 12-14Mb, but I haven't checked the posts of other members to confirm.

      My conditions: -

Using all Sky bits (grey cable)
      ADSL Nation Faceplate
      One phone plugged in
      No extensions

      Should be ideal conditions

You should be on for a similar connection then if he is also on Sky.

Remember that Sky uses a target noise margin of 7dB. Other ISPs use other figures and different methods to get the best from your connection.

For reference you can add an extension or two if you are using the filtered faceplate. The issue with extensions is when the normal unfiltered faceplate is used.

I see - I was hoping for similar speeds to be honest - my dad is indeed with Sky.

      I miss 1.7MB/s download speeds.

Re: New Sky User (well, ordered tonight!)

Spare noise margin is kind of low. 16MB will only be achievable if you get an increase of at least 1350kbps per DB of the remaining noise margin which seems a little ambitious with a 26DB attenuation but you never know.

Overall you should have be in for a vast improvement over BT's 3MB.

Re: New Sky User (well, ordered tonight!)

When I was first connected my noise margin was 14.5dB I think on an attenuation of 31.5dB.

I'm now on 15meg so I'd think you should get noticeably more than me.
