Have you tried your previous router and your new router one after the other just to make sure it was your router holding you down and not your lines 'mood'.

Also go to CMD and type 'tracert sky.com' and copy paste your stats here.

Which is about right taking into account transmission overheads, give or take 0.5Mbps

Your routers chipset is matched to the ISAM in the exchange which is a good thing. I am not sure but I think if you had a proper BT socket with a demarcation point you may have had a higher sync.

Re: sky telling me my line can only handle 18mb but im sure their wrong!

I doubt the engineer will be interested in doing that since your sockets are not daisy-chained together and installing a nte5 master socket on one of your existing sockets won't make a difference.

If however you tell the engineer that you don't require the extension sockets and would like just one master socket he might do it. But the problem is you will be charged for such a call out as your broadband is working fine at the moment.

Re: sky telling me my line can only handle 18mb but im sure their wrong!

You can't connect them together wirelessly. You can connect them together using an ethernet cable or homeplugs. Scubbie has a guide which shows how you can do this.

How to connect two Routers together

If there's only pc upstairs that you need a wired connection to then you can get rid of the second router from the equation and just run an ethernet cable to your pc directly or use the homeplugs directly with your pc.

You may live less than 500m from the exchange as the crow flys, but your actual line will take a less than direct route. Admittedly 18db attenuation is certainly not a long line, but there are people out there with 10 or below db and these would probably get the full 20 meg. So from this, you can see your line is just that bit too long to allow the full 20 meg.

You probably would not be able to tell the difference from downloading something at 18 meg to 20 meg.

Re: sky telling me my line can only handle 18mb but im sure their wrong!

Having just read through this thread, there are a couple of questions that I would have that haven't been asked:

      • why did the old Sagem 2504 go down? - there might be something linked to your reduction in speed
      • did you change the PSU when you swapped over the router? - again this could be a problem
      • have you changed the microfilters? - they can and do wear out & Sky's are often rubbish
      • if you haven't changed the microfilters, how old are the ones you are using?

With a line attenuation you may be able to get a better speed, but this does depend on a few things outside of your control. With the Netgear DG934G I was getting 18dB on my line. The connection speed was around 19,400 kbps.

This improved with the Sagem 2304n.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
