Sky Broadband charges 100 for moving home

      Hi everyone

Can you please help? Sky has asked me to pay 100 when I told them I am moving to a new place. I only have Sky Broadband and Sky Talk.

The new house has a BT socket, Virgin does not charge a penny for moving home. I don't need an engineer or technician coming to my place to install the broadband, its a straight forward procedure.

Anyone here please facing the same problem?

      Thanks

It depends if the BT line there is active or not. If not then BT would charge to set up your phone line too.

It may be worth taking your call further up the chain to see if a supervisor or manager can waive the charge if you are staying in the same area and wish to retain your phone number.

If you are moving to a new area, then I would be tempted to cancel at the old address and set up a new contract at the new home.

BT used to always charge around 120-150 for connecting a new line. They dropped this as it hindered their ability to regain customers who had moved to other providers.

Re: Sky Broadband charges 100 for moving home

I was charged the 100 odd quid by BT for moving house 18 months ago as, whilst there was a BT line at the new property it wasn't an active line.

our standard connection charge of 130 may apply if an engineer needs to do work at your telephone exchange or your property.

Re: Sky Broadband charges 100 for moving home

I moved home back in November and paid 29.99 for a new line via Sky.
I've just checked the Sky Website for a new order and it says that the usual charge for a new connection is 39 but this is free till 26th June.

Ring sky again and inquire about the charge. If they stick to the 100 quid you will be better off cancelling sky and ordering your line via BT.

BT will either provide your line for

      a) 30 quid - You will pay the monthly line rental only and get weekend calls. This is suitable if you wish to keep your line rental with BT and get phone and broadband off some other provider.
      b) Free - If you take a broadband and phone package with BT they will provide your line for free.

When you ring sky again make sure you mention that BT are doing a new line for free so you don't see why you should pay an obnoxious charge. Hopefully they will waive or reduce the charge.

Re: Sky Broadband charges 100 for moving home

I received this email from Sky CS this morning,

" On checking your account because you only have Sky Talk and Broadband with us the activation charge for phone and broadband is 100GBP. The reason for this is because you were giving the phone line activation at a discounted rate when you first joined Sky, we need to reactivate it at the standard rate of 100GBP as this is what Openreach charge us for reactivation."

Its not true, I paid BT to activate the line in my house, then I signed up for Sky broadband with my phone line active.

I told them in my last email. I will contact BT to activate the line?

I have 12 months contract and I've only been with sky 6months now.

      Any suggestions guys?

Thanks I really appreciate your help.

Have you got your line rental with BT at the moment?

      By all means

You may want to downgrade your subscription (if it's possible) before you cancel to the free talk and broadband package. This way your early termination charge would be based on the line rental only.
