DLM Complete - Slower Than Expected

      Hi all,

Just moved house a few weeks ago and went through the usual steps to transfer broadband to new house.

MySky shows line testing completed last night and has settled on this:

      Router Stats

      Connection Speed

      9215 kbps

      906 kbps

      Line Attenuation

      25.5 db

      11.9 db

      Noise Margin

      20.8 db

      8.5 db

These stats are from the test socket using the standard Sky microfilter (haven't got round to buying a filtered faceplate here yet) and a Belkin RJ11 cable.

I was told by Sky when re-ordering after moving that I was in a pretty good area speed-wise and should be looking at something in the region of 13-14Mb.

Can anyone advise as to whether the above stats suggest I should be getting better speeds than it looks to have settled on?

      Cheers in advance

Plenty of room for improvement. Ring sky and ask them to uncap you. Your downstream and upstream margin should hover around 7db to give you the maximum speed.

Great stuff, just what I wanted to hear! Thanks for that.

Any idea what speeds I should be shooting for based on the stats? Is 13-14Mb overly-optimistic?

      Cheers again.

I'd say something between 17 and 18meg. (Just guessing)
You can ring Sky now if you want to. CST is 24\7. Just letting you know incase this is why you were going to call in the morning.

Re: DLM Complete - Slower Than Expected

Funny you should say that, I was feeling impatient so I fired off a quick email via the help centre on the Sky website giving my router stats and what speed I thought I should be getting. I seem to remember that worked for me once before, they emailed me back in a few hours after reconfiguring the line and it was pretty much spot on.

I'd be overe the moon with 17-18meg! Just makes ya wonder why they don't just set it at that in the first place though.

Re: DLM Complete - Slower Than Expected

      Hi again,

Just got an email reply from Sky saying they have upped my speed to just over 15Mb.

This is what I'm getting now:

      Router Stats

      Connection Speed

      Down - 15285 kbps

      Up - 894 kbps

      Line Attenuation

      Down - 25.5 db

      Up - 11.9 db

      Noise Margin

      Down - 10.6 db

      Up - 8.0 db

I'm attributing the big discrepancy in what the router stats show to what I'm actually receiving to a very decrepit looking socket and an ancient non-Sky filter that I've inherited from the previous occupant (soon to be replaced with an XT2005 Filtered Master Faceplate which I've just ordered).

Am I right to assume that this is what's causing the discrepancy? I'm not confident that I'll gain the lost 4-5Mb just by replacing the faceplate.

Any thoughts/reassurances would be much appreciated
