Another person needing help with their Broadband Speed

About a year ago I got pushed up to the unlimited package due to my usage of my Internet Line. I didn't get a substantially large increase in speed but wasn't too bothered at the time. ~2MB/s

Since then my family has grown up a bit and everyone in the house hold now has PCs and wants to do Youtube, iPlayer which leads to a congested line. After a bit of digging and investigation it looks to me as tho I should be able to get somewhere between 6-8MB/s. I'm 2.9km from the exchange according to SamKnows.com (SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Huddersfield (MYHUD) Exchange).

I've called Sky a few times to try and get this sorted and don't seem to be getting anywhere, in fact they have dropped my upstream to 0.1Mbps...

Here are the things I've tried with stats each time:

After removing the ring wire on the master socket increased Downstream from ~1600kbps -> ~2000kbps:

      System Up Time 169:42:09
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 26189 15109 0 4571 48800 00:06:43
      LAN 10M/100M 11062251 20096295 0 4686 2457 169:42:06
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.1 db 29.0 db

And plugging straight into test socket

      System Up Time 00:01:23
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 42 21 0 129 52 00:00:29
      LAN 10M/100M 627 1033 0 2589 1520 00:01:20
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.2 db 28.0 db

      Without other phones in:

      System Up Time 00:00:48
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 9 7 0 92 70 00:00:07
      LAN 10M/100M 882 1086 0 10227 2910 00:00:46
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.7 db 28.0 db

      New Microfilter, phones in:

      System Up Time 00:00:59
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 50 96 0 647 1090 00:00:05
      LAN 10M/100M 627 837 0 5451 1804 00:00:56
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.4 db 29.0 db

I've also done a speed test comparing my phone's 3g with my land line to really annoy myself and saw that:

      Landline Downstream 1.7Mbps
      Landline Upstream 0.1Mbps

      3G Downstream 2.7Mbps
      3G Upstream 1.6Mbps

I've started using the Sky Router Tool to log data and see the attenuation and SNR's but not sure what I can do with those...can provide screenshots if required.

Noticed this morning I was on G.DMT (not quite sure that makes a difference or not tho).

Have I just got a naff line? Or is there anything else I can do at my end?

Re: Another person needing help with their Broadband Speed

6-8Mb is probably a bit too optimistic, but you should be able to get another 1-2 Mb. The distance from the exchange is not really a good guide to what you should get as the actual line length could be much longer, the attenuation is the important figure.

Call Sky and tell them you have made improvements to your wiring and would like the cap on your line lifted. Emphasise that you want you upstream improved as well as your downstream. If tier 1 say you can't get any more, ask to be put through to the CST as you know that is not correct.

Also as a final check, see if all your extension sockets are dead and without dial tone when the master faceplate is removed. If not then the wiring is incorrect and could be effecting your speed.
