      20mbps currently running at 7mbps

      Hello skyuser forum,

I have been a sky customer for just over a month now and signed up for sky world, talk and broadband unlimited. At sign up I was informed my broadband would be running at 10-12mbps which was expected by me due to my cousin living ten houses down the road who currently gets the same speed with sky.

Cutting a long story short, I'm only getting 7mbps and I don't understand why. My line is fine. I've only got one socket (master socket) and have the microfilter plugged into the test socket right now.

Sky are telling me 7mbps is the max I'm going to get. Two days ago I asked whether I was on ADSL2+ or G.DMT. They informed I was on ADSL2+ and then switched me to G.DMT. No improvements however.

Before I post my router stats it is important to mention when I first got my broadband kit I used my own adsl cable between the microfilter and the router because I needed the router in a different room. This cable was 30m long and I was told by sky when complaining initially that the speed was degraded and running at 7mbps because of this. Went back to the original cables and no difference even after several reboots.

Sorry for the long thought demanding post and I'm thankful to anyone who offers informative advice.

Re: 20mbps currently running at 7mbps

There is something holding your speed down.

Your line attenuation indicates that you should be capable of receiving around 12Mb, but the line noise indicates that this is the best possible speed.

You stated that you are using the test socket. Can ask you to confirm:

      * the micro-filter is the 1st item plugged in (before anything else, especially the Sky STB.

      * that you have tried other micro-filters, and not just those supplied by Sky

      * that you are using the grey ADSL lead supplied with the Sky router

Also do you have any addition telephone extensions plugged into the telephone socket on the micro-filter?

Re: 20mbps currently running at 7mbps

      Hi thanks for your response.

I can confirm the micro-filter is the 1st item plugged in before the sky stb.

Unfortunately I only have the two micro-filters sky provided and both don't improve anything.

Yes I am using the grey ADSL lead supplied with the sky router.

I've got the sky stb going into the telephone socket of the micro-filter. The sky connector itself has two sockets on it and one of them has my house phone going into it.

Are you suggesting the problem is within my house? Can you recommend me any good micro-filters and finally is the BT i-plate any good?

Thanks a lot for your time!

Re: 20mbps currently running at 7mbps

If you are plugged into the test socket using only a filter and the Sky ADSL cable, then your line is not 'fine'. It is the reason your speed is so low. Whether this is due to a fault or the line being in a generally poor condition it is not possible to say. You could try asking them to take you off G.DMT and put you back on ADSL2+. If they will not do that, ask them to lift your download cap from 7232 to 8000 or better and your upload to 800.

Can you try taking your stats with only the router connected?

Re: 20mbps currently running at 7mbps

Ok, that's good news so far.

Since you don't have any extensions hard-wired to the socket, the i-Plate won't benefit you. Personally I would definitely opt for a Filtered Faceplate in the long-term.

Since fitting the grey ADSL lead, have you contacted Sky again to see if they can manually change you line to around 12Mbs? You may have been capped by DLM.

As for the filters, I wonder if you are able to borrow a known working micro-filter from a friend? If you are considering purchasing a filtered faceplate, then I wouldn't recommend buying a new micro-filter.

The pair that Sky send are not always the best quality, hence why it is a good idea to rule them out.

Finally, between your telephone socket and the green street box, are there any boxes or other connection points or is the line one continuous length?

Some areas are prone to poor line quality (such as Basingstoke) be cause BT installed aluminium wiring some time ago. Copper is always better. Any breaks in the line can also degrade the connection.

Re: 20mbps currently running at 7mbps

Other than trying another micro-filter from a friend, I personally can't think of anything else other than to call Sky. Other more experienced members might have some additional info to go through first.
