Stats seem good but still loosing connection

I have recently moved over to sky and have signed up to broadband connect. I have set up the supplied D-link router and been waiting several days for the connection / speed to settle down. 7 days later I'm still having connection problems.

I am pleased with the speed I get when I do connect - about 3meg which is what I expected. However my internet connection keeps dropping out for a few minutes and then reconnects. This tolerable while surfing the net but when i use my PS3 via ethernet the connection drops and I can't play online.

Below are some of the states I've had over the past few day and I've taken the test from my living room and the test socket.

I think my noise margin is okay but other than that I don't really know what the problem might be. Does anyone have any suggestions.

The better results from your test socket show your internal wiring is interfering. Buy, fit and use a filtered faceplate, this will solve some of your problems.

I say some, as your biggest problem is the package you are on. Have a look here and you will get an idea what I mean-

Hi and thanks for the response. I'm certainly no expert but the figures between the test socket and the livingroom socket seem quite similar, are the small variations making that much difference?

I really don't think I'm getting anywhere near sky usage limits as I surf the net and play on my ps3 a little, no big videos or anything. The house has been desired in the last 3 months and cat5e cable installed so I don't thInk it's the internal wiring.

So far quite disappointed with the service and I can't get any better package from sky. I'm at a deadend!

      Quite a big difference

It matters little what you use, you would still be throttled at peak times, even if you downloaded zero.

As mentioned before, the figures in your Test socket show your internal wiring is reducing your connection speed, but that is not the only problem. With the drop outs you are getting, especially when a call is received, it looks like there is a fault on your line. Plug a corded phone into the Test socket, dial 1 digit and listen. Do you hear any noises?

If you read even part of the thread I linked to, you will see that even if your line was perfect, you would still suffer from severe throttling making your broadband almost unusable. This will not improve until Sky pay for more bandwidth, which is unlikely to happen. You best bet is to find another ISP and move to them asap.

Is the router losing sync (internet light going off) or do you get a steady amber internet light?

Re: Stats seem good but still loosing connection

As Tom has already mentioned, there are some issues with the wiring in your home.

It is likely that this will have directly caused the dropped connections.

      Standard things to check include:

      * micro-filter (these can and do fail on occasions)

      * noise on your telephone line (use a chorded telephone & dial '1' then listen carefully, do not attempt this with a wireless handset as they automatically suppress any hissing that you are trying to find)

      * that the micro-filter is the first thing plugged in to each and every telephone socket in your home (especially before a Sky STB, extension lead, fax machine)

Once you have done all this, you will then have a clearer idea of where the fault is.

However, no matter how hard you try and how much advice the members of this forum can provide, there is a huge problem that only you can change. If you call Sky, they will not mention this because it is seriously bad for business.

      Sky BB Connect is rubbish.

Try going to a speedtest site and running tests at different times of the day. You will find that even simple browsing often becomes impossible in the evenings and at the weekend.

Other ISPs do not throttle your service as much as what Sky Connect gets.

If you are not willing to change, then please let us know. You are not alone. Sky has over 2 million people on Sky BB Connect.

I wouldnt say this is tottaly true, not because i speak to many sky connect customer with slow speeds who get 3-4mbps down from 8mbps due to traffic management, and in my eyes that is ideal.
When it takes you down by a big notch, down to a meg for example is when it becomes a problem.
And i know other ISP's take it down a fair bit.

Remember not to use over 40gb a month up/down btw.
They are hot to grab ya for that.

Oh yea, and in regards to the fellas issue.

Main thing i was wondering is that call which was made from test socket, is that consitent?
So no matter where its plugged in, if the phone is rung will the broadband drop?

If so, youve got a call to sky to be making as your getting interference there.
