what are SKY LLu (20Mb ADSL2+) connection settings

a forum user is having trouble connecting his new Netgear DG834GT (not sky branded) to his SKY broadband - he has entered the username and password and setup the settings as so :

Protocol/Encapsulation :- PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
      Multiplexing method: VC-BASED or VC-Mux
(On some routers the above 2 settings may be combined as "PPPoA VC-Mux".)
      VPI = 0
      VCI = 38
      DSL Standard: G.dmt
      Security Protocol: CHAP

thing is i think these are for SKY CONNECT ADSL1 connections.. i maybe wrong but my adsl1 IPstream connections where same settings, soon as i moved to o2 ADSL2+ it were LLC-Based VPI: 0 , VCI: 101

can anyone help with what might be the problem?

he has upgraded the GT with DGteam firmware 1018
      - Hardware - Netgear DG834Nv1
      - Line Attenuation - 27.5db
      - Sync Rate - 17,600k
      - Noise Margin - 7db
      - Latency - 28ms

I have asked him to double check this as capital letters must go in same case

do you have to spoof mac codes?

@ thomas can you just follow through the instructions again and be sure you havent missed anything out? missing out the wifi and SNR change - reboot router aswell

      here you go.. full instructions

HOW TO RESET ROUTER BACK TO DEFAULT:

1 Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
      2 Release the button.
3 Wait for the router to reboot.
4 Log in with the default password.

If the router configuration was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
      5 Unplug the router's power.
6 Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
7 Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
8 Wait for the router to reboot.
9 Log in with the default password.

THEN ONCE DONE AND CAN GET INTO ROUTER

after downloading DGteam 1018 for the GT go into the router settings and look for ROUTER UPGRADE the click on it (in left colomn) and then click BROWSE and browse to the DGteam 1018 IMG file you downloaded and double click on it and go from there - follow on screen instructions - then once its done you setup the ADSL configuration and then the WIFI

!!! - remember to click apply at bottom of each page you change

      here is a walkthrough:

      (BASIC SETTINGS)
does your ISP require a login? YES
      Encapsulation: PPPoA
      Login:(enter your ADSL login here)
      Password:(enter your ADSL Password here)
      Idle Timeout: 0
Internet IP Address: Get dynamically from ISP
Domain Name Server: Get dynamically from ISP (or you can use OPEN DNS or use nameserver program later to determine your closest and fastest DNS servers, for now choose 'get from ISP')
      NAT: Enable
      CLICK APPLY

      (ADSL SETTINGS)
      Multiplexing Method: VC-Based
      VPI: 0
      VCI: 38
      CLICK APPLY

      (WAN SETUP)
only ensure that in the MTU box the value is 1500
CLICK APPLY if had to change it

      (WIRELES SETTINGS)
Name(SSID): (any name you want to id your wifi network with)
      Region: Europe
Channel: 1, 6 or 11 are the best channels, choose one
Mode: G only this gives better performance for 54Mbps and its very unlikely you would use a B grade (11Mbps) device - all devices like Xbox, phones etc are G (54Mbps) or N (150/300Mbps)
      Enable Wireless Access Point: ON
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID): ON
      Wireless Isolation: OFF
Security Options: WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) not WPA2 to keep compantibility with other devices that may not have WPA2 like Xbox/Phones etc
Network Key: (enter your desired password here)
      CLICK APPLY

Now once you done all this you should probably be connected but if not reboot the router and wait until the lights stop flashing orange and go green then you should be connected - if so then you can proceed to the advanced adsl page to lower your SNR to get higher speeds

      (ADVANCED ADSL)
SNR Percentage: enter 40% into box
      CLICK APPLY

now wait a minute for it too resync then go to the ROUTER STATUS page and you will see your new connection speed but at the bottom click Show Statistics and you will see what the SNR (Noise Margin) is..
      e,g, mne says

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 18744 kbps 1282 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.5 db 13.4 db
Noise Margin 2.9 db 6.4 db

you dont want to get it any lower than 2db as your risking the chance of higher error rates (and higher interleaving settings) and your browsing actually becoming a fraction slower as it has to fix more errors or re-download them - saying that Ive had it at 0.9db before working what seemed to be fine but errors where just a little higher and interleaving was set higher so i decided to drop to 2-3db and lose 0.5Mbps in favour of less errors and mroe reliable line

you can use DMT tool on the router too view stats like errors and interleaving depth
      - Hardware - Netgear DG834Nv1
      - Line Attenuation - 27.5db
      - Sync Rate - 17,600k
      - Noise Margin - 7db
      - Latency - 28ms

No spoofing needed, just the username/password and the other details you've already posted
