      Angry Incredibly slow speeds....

Our household has changed from Virgin Media's whopping 50 mbps to Sky's Decent 20 mbps which is a big difference in itself however we are currently receiving less than 1mbps which is beyond a joke. my question is why is our speed less than 1 mbps, we received on average with virgin anything from 40-48.

      Re: Incredibly slow speeds....

      a) VM is fibre optic which is completely different technology
      b) Copper Wire BB (ie everyone other than VM) can only provide the fastest speeds if you are close to the bt exchange. The further from the exchange the slower the connection
      c) There is a 10 day training period (DLM) which tries different speeds until it finds the fastest most stablist speed
      d) You could have a probem with your internal phone wiring.

Check my sig for some tools to help.

If you can post your stats (ie Line attenuation and Noise Margin) from your router then we can advise further.

      One question..... why leave VM?

As I'm only 16 i generally don't have much say in what goes on in my house and my mum said that it would be much cheaper i fought till the end on to stay with VM but alas she switched to Sky

As reddwarfcrew said, so's we can help you, we need the router stats How to get your router statistics and the details of the setup i.e. are you in the BT master socket, are there any extensions. With these snippets we can find out what's going on and hopefully help you get better speeds

      Re: Incredibly slow speeds....

Okay, for that attenuation you should be able to get 7-8Mb tops SkyUser - Potential ADSL2 Line Speed Checker & Calculator

You have a high noise margin (target is 6.9db) which does show you will get more.

Wait for the 10 days training period to finish then post back.

Is the router plugged into the BT Master socket? Do you have any other devices on the line that are not filtered?

Should be at least getting the 4mbps start speed at this point. Reboot the router and see if the downstream shoots to 4mbps. If not, then looks like your set-up is incorrect within the house.

      Re: Incredibly slow speeds....

It is not placed in the master socket as the router wouldn't be able to connect to our computers. i would like to add that i can temporarily use the master socket however we can only have one pc on the internet if we do.
