      Slow Speeds, considering changing

      Hello all,

I know you must get this all the time (someone posting/moaning about slow speeds)
I currently pay 17 a month for the Sky Connect Broadband package which i believe to be upto 8mb with a 40gb cap.
I have been struggling to get 1mb let alone 8mb in off peak times! In peak times my internet is unbearable (web pages take 1-4 minutes to load). I am receiving dial up speeds!
I have rung/emailed sky on numerous occasions complaining and asking for assistance but am still receiving these slow speeds.
I was wondering if anybody here could help or suggest an alternative ISP.
I have been looking into virgin medias XL 30mb package.

      Would greatly appreciate anybodys input/help.

      Thanks,
      Josh

      You're on connect...

      I'd advise looking elsewhere!

      lol thanks for the advise,
i have just looked on that exchange checker page and there are no LLU's available in my area!
so does this mean looking else where is pointless?
Virgin Media is available in my area but have heard mixed reviews and dont want to get stuck in an 18month contract with them if i am going to have problems.

      There are various BB suppliers.

As everyone has different requirements, it would be better to search for alternatives yourself. There are plenty who can offer a good re-badged BT product.

if your exchange has been 21CN enabled, you should also be able to receive ADSL2+.

      Re: Slow Speeds, considering changing

have been looking around for a while now but my friend reckons changing bb provider wont help as its all on the same line :s is this true?
I just had another look at the exchange checker and i dont think 21CN is enabled either :s
      so its not looking good.

Could anyone please advise if my router status looks healthy please:

      Re: Slow Speeds, considering changing

The main issue with Sky Connect at present, isn't the connection speed, but rather that it is heavily capped. There are simple too many Sky subscribers on it for the bandwidth that they have purchased from BT Wholesale.

Evenings means that it is throttled back even more, because that's when it apparently gets busy at precisely the same time of day.

If you go over your limit, then you can have 7 days of misery before it goes up.

Other ISPs will have different conditions. For example, they might not include your upload as part of the allowed bandwidth. I know one that doesn't include your usage between midnight & 9am.

Some have more control over the connection than Sky does for the Connect product.

Until Sky fix these issues, none of the regular posters here are likely to recommend Sky BB Connect to anyone.

Even though you're on Connect, and as suggested you're best just moving to another ISP, you still have some other issue here by the looks of it. Your sync speed should be more towards 7-8mbps.

How many telephone sockets do you use?
Is there a microfilter connected directly into each telephone socket in use, ensuring that nothing before the filter?
Is the router connected to the master socket or an extension socket?
Are you using the short grey dsl cable that Sky provided, or running an extension telephone cable to the router?
Do you have Sky tv connected to any telephone sockets?
Do you have a test socket?
Do you have any noise or issues on the landline?

      Re: Slow Speeds, considering changing

      We have 3 phone sockets:
1 master with a micro filter and sky digital box on.
1 additional with a micro filter and telephone on.
1 additional with micro filter and sky digital box and wireless router.

Yes there is a micro filter on each telephone socket

The router is connected to an extension socket.

I am not using the grey dsl cable that sky provided but a simular black one (only difference is colour)

Yes i have sky tv connected to the master socket (using a micro filter) and sky tv connected to an extension socket that also has the router on (using a micro filter)

Yes i believe the test socket is behind the master sockets face plate which i have tested but speeds were still slow (when testing, how long should you leave the router plugged into the test socket for before conducting a speed test)

What do you mean by noise or issues on the landline?

      Thanks guys for your help,
      Josh

      Re: Slow Speeds, considering changing

Running the router off an extension isn't the greatest of ideas. By noise, I mean literally noise/crackling or any issues that you can re-call (faintness, calls dropping etc.) on your landline.

Plug the router into the test socket with just a filter and the short grey dsl cable that Sky provided. Post the stats up from there and we'll have another look at whether it'll improve things.
