    Another slow connection

      Another slow connection

      My girlfriends broadband is running at incredibly slow speeds. Downloads from reputable sites such as cnet and fileplanet never reach more than 7kbps. Amazingly she has apparently put up with this for almost a year. Before that speeds were fine using the same computer and router, a Netgear DG934G. The router stats are showing as

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 64 kbps 64 kbps
      Line Attenuation 30 db 16 db
      Noise Margin 31 db 28 db

      The connection speed has never once gotten higher or lower than 64 kbps. Unfortunately even after reading the tutorials on this site I am unable to figure out what may be the cause. She only has one phone socket and I have tried with 4 different filters with no changes.

      Any ideas on what may be the cause?

      A couple of relevant questions:

      Are those stats from her Test Socket? If not, could you test by using that socket please and post the stats.

      What BB package does she have? (check via viewing her On-Line sky account)

      Which exchange is she connected to?

      That is a test speed. The line has been down for some reason and the broadband has not been properly restored. Call Sky right away and tell them you need the line configured for its best speed which should be 12-14Mb..

      I have emailed them about the speed and will get her to ring them after work. Just to answer the questions asked. The stats were from the test socket. The package is broadband unlimited and the my sky page says the speed is set at 6mbps if I am reading it right. And the exchange is Armley MYARM Leeds Yorkshire & Humberside.

      The stats were from the test socket.
      If it were in an extension socket previously, that could account for the very low speed it was set at.

      She only has one phone socket and as the computer is next to it there is no long extension lead. Just the standard wire that came with the router.

      I am just speculating now, but it is possible there was a fault on the line which caused the poor speed. When it was fixed, the broadband has not been properly re-enabled. The low speed may also be a result of turning the router off during the DLM training. Anyway it looks good for a reasonable speed now.

      By identifying the Exchange, you've confirmed that it isn't one of the exchanges affected by speed issues elsewhere in England & Wales.

      Also it definitely does have Sky's equipment, meaning that you should be able to get Sky Unlimited.

      At present it is still running just as slow. The 6mbps quote on mysky is what my girlfriend was quoted when she first signed up for sky services. Apparently thats the speed she used to get. It dropped to the 7kbps nearly a year ago and somehow she has put up with it all this time, a simple youtube video takes an hour to load so no idea how she copes

      I have recieved a reply from sky by email to say something deffinately isn't right. Trouble is they tried to ring the house phone but because of the terrible line the house phone does not work either. All being well though this means its getting looked into and will be soted soon.

      Looking back along the thread, you didn't mention that the land-line was playing up. It is highly likely that the speed is a result of the wiring going wrong.

      If this is the case, and the person who has responded to the email had his/her head screwed on, that a BTO Engineer will be dispatched in the next few days to resolve the issue.
