My Line Attenuation figure has just halved!

Just logged on to check my router stats and have found that my LA has halved? Is this normal? what could cause this?

These were my stats about 10 days ago
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 20.0 db

      These are the new stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 9.9 db 28.0 db

But just did a speed test which wasn't good, similar to what i was getting at this time of day with the previous figures. about 0.5mb!

That's weird because Line Attenuation doesn't normally change that much as it is mainly down to the length of your line.
With either sets of figures though you should definately get more than 0.5 meg.
      There's something wrong somewhere.

I am on the connect package and Sky have said my line will do 8mb, I get 6mb speed in the mornings but then downhill from there. The router is plugged into the master socket has im using the wireless connection on my laptop. Tried all the recommended tweaks on this site.

Is it a good thing for the LA to be low?

The lower the LA the better.
      Anything under 20db is superb.

I did change something this afternoon. While browsing some other forums came across an article about how your sockets should be wired up, eg. only no2 and no5 should be connected in all sockets in the house with the same coloured wires throughout. So i went and unscrewed the two extension sockets and the master one, and found that other wires were connected to other connectors (I understand some eginneers do this to make sure the socket is tidy, no loose wiring left). In all 3 sockets I clipped out the wires to no 3 and no4 connectors. Coincidence?

Not a coincidence I think, you have probably disconnected the ring wire (not needed) it will do wonders for your line quality as this wire acts as a big aerial and causes interference.

could also be a bug in the firmware of the router, i see the figure 15.5 quite alot on my router, when my true attenuation is 36.

the change has only happened today since this afternoon.

Just did another speed test with the following stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 12.7 db 28.0 db

      and got:
Download Speed: 1463 kbps (182.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 369 kbps (46.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

But then i downloaded the file of the ftp link and got speeds of 730kbs, which was great.
