      Speed issues

An Openreach engineer called at my house today to fix a problem with my phoneline (wasn't getting any dialtone). After he left, I logged onto the internet and noticed that my speed being reported in the router is less than half of what I normally get (7meg), yet I'm actually only getting 1meg or so if I try to download something.

I've also noticed that the Network type has changed from PPPoE to MER.

I've tried the usual basic troubleshooting steps, swapping microfilters, plugging into the master socket etc. I've tried to restore my router to factory settings but it doesn't seem to work. The router won't re-connect to the internet after I hold down the reset button (tried 10 seconds, 30 seconds and 50 seconds), so I have to turn it off and back on to get it to work.

Everything was fine on the broadband side of things until the engineer came.

I'm on Sky Unlimited or whatever its called (the top one). My router is the black Netgear one, and the firmware version is SKY_2.04.

Have you tried calling Sky? It may be that your line needs to be reconfigured after the work.

Yeah I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow in work. Wanted to give it 24 hours before calling them in case it was a case of it settling down. Just wanted to check if I was missing something obvious.

Are you on Sky phone rental? Yours is the first Netgear router I have seen reported to be on MER. I hope they are not putting this on all the Netgear routers, I have had no problems for years and don't particularly want them now. I have yet to see anything good posted about routers moved to MER.

      Re: Speed issues

Apparantly I was put on DLM (Dynamic Line Manager) last Saturday because of the trouble I was having with my phoneline, and that is still on. Hopefully it will be removed later this evening. Thanks for your help, I will let you know what happens.

      Re: Speed issues

I would double check that information. If you reported a phone fault the advisor shouldn't have requested DLM to restabalize youe line as if there was an issue their, then basically DLM is trying to profile a fualty line and this would tie in with low speeds now.

Call sky back up asked to be transffered to CST and ask them to manually configure your line. Explain that DLM was reactivated whilst you had a line fault and it would appear it has set your line to a much lower speed than it is capable of.

If thats the case the CST agent should be able to get your line back to what it was within a minute or 2. This seems much bettter than waiting a few days (with the slow connection) and then probably having to phone again anyway.

I think Sky are moving their whole network access to MER because it's cheaper as far as upgrading exchanges and from an operational point of view.

      Re: Speed issues

Well, as the Sky guy on the phone said, they removed the DLM and I'm now back up to my usual speed!
