      Re: New Unlimited Customer

I fitted the filtered faceplate and saw no improvement. In fact, the downstream noise margin has dropped to 8.1db. What I did find when I opened the NTE5 was that there is a mass of wires inside from what looks like two extension cables. I've no idea where they go; I'm in a rented flat and they were there when I moved in and they look like they've been there a long while. I tried to follow the cables but couldn't figure it out. Anyway, these extensions were not actually connected to the back of the existing faceplate so I guess they are connected directly to the drop wire terminals on the back, which makes me think that a filtered faceplate isn't going to help here. Do I have any grounds for getting BT to sort this wiring out?

Annoyingly, I have another master socket next to this one connected to a separate incoming cable, probably fitted in the days of dial-up modems as a second line, which looks tidy inside with no extensions. So why do I have to use the dodgy one…?

A noise margin of 8.1dB is good.

Could you post your stats again, using the filtered plate?

      Re: New Unlimited Customer

Are there wires connected to the faceplate? Remove the inner plate and check that only the 2 incoming wires are connected to the A-B terminals. Post some pics if you are not sure what is happening.

      Re: New Unlimited Customer

For your distance/attenuation, I would guess that is about as high as you'll get. That's a nice connection.

A filtered faceplate may help to squeeze a few more kbs, but that's it.

      Nice one!

      Re: New Unlimited Customer

I could make a significant difference to the attenuation.

If you need a connection upstairs and it is proved that using the test socket helps, look at the guide I posted earlier today, it might give you an idea about how to go from there.

How to connect two Routers together
