      Another slow speed thread

      Hello,

We just recently got fed up of BT's slow speed so decided to change to Sky. During and after the 10day testing period the speed was 90-150kbps which was faster than BT had ever given us(~60kbps).

For living only half an hour away from the capital you'd think you would be able to get faster speed but there you go, English BB sucks quite frankly (having lived in Thailand, Singapore and having friends in Scandinavia, Germany, etc). That point is moot though.

For the last few days my router has been displaying this:
      Code:
Port	Status	TxPkts	RxPkts	Collisions	Tx B/s	Rx B/s	Up Time
      WAN	PPPoA	7474	10916	0	964	8225 00:23:30
      LAN 21818	15880	0	13753	1806 00:24:24
      WLAN 6909	5949	0	2249	1070 00:23:20
      ADSL Link	Downstream	Upstream
Connection Speed	384 kbps	554 kbps
      Line Attenuation	60.5db	35.8db
      Noise Margin	11.6db	11.0db
This is slower than what we got with BT. We've only been with Sky since the beginning of January (unfortunately Virgin isn't available in our area). General advice wanted about how to get it back to what it was after the testing period and how fast you think we should be able to get. Also general query about why my upload is so much faster than my download.

      Hey Fraccles,

There's probably plently of people on here more qualified to help you but here's my input:

First of all, due to your line attenuation, we can see your line is quite long.

If there is nothing wrong with your line then the max your probably going to get is around 3000kbps

      Secondly, whats your setup like?
make sure your filter is the first thing in your master socket before anything else.
do you have any other sockets apart from the master?
can you post your stats from your test socket please?

How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

      Then we'll go from there.

      Thanks,

      Reecicles

With a 60dB attenuation you'd do well to get more than 2Mbps. As it stands you're slightly capped but as said plug into your test socket and repost stats and we'll see improvements can be made

Because your download is so slow.

Just to let you know, its my 4th day into activation and here are my stats:

      downstream upstream
      connection speed 3271 798
      line attenuation 65.0 db 39.5db
      Noise margin 5.0db 7.4db

It is very possible to get more than 2Mbps on a 60db attenuation.

The speed you get depends on each individual line. You are doing exceptionally well, but as your noise margin is low, I think you may settle down to a speed around 2.5Mb. This would be very good for your line distance from the exchange.

yeh, i'm quite chuffed with this tbh.

Just need to ring sky and ask to be put on gamer profile as when i ping bbc.co.uk it jumps around like 49ms 56ms 90ms

      and then averages around 50-60's

The gamer progile may not be a great idea with such a long line. Changing this may have a bad effect on your actual download/upload speeds and start to build up errors on your line.
