      Router Use

Read quite a lot of the Sky router within this forum. Need some clarification:

      1) Could a Sky branded router (Netgear by any other name) be used on another ISP service e.g talktalk without problem ?

      2) I've a friend on Sky so he's using a Sky router. Could I give him another as a spare that would connect without problems if his went faulty ?

      1. Yes if you can flash the non-Sky firmware to it
      2. Yes so long as Sky don't disable the logins

Thanks for feedback. I've arranged to call round friends tomorrow. I'll swap units to test connectivity and if all OK I'll leave with him as a spare.

Only if you can download & burn new firmware to the router then you could then connect it to any other supplier.

Sky have embedded it's own sign-on details into the routers. Without changing the Firmware, you can't change these.

Many old Sky routers are available on eBay. It is entirely your choice whether to give him the router.

The alternative is for your friend to purchase a new router and put in the sign-on details from the old router. Take a look at this site to help you here. Technically this is against Sky's T&Cs, but many people do this and Sky tend to ignore the issue.

There is a 'Sticky' on this site that will provide you with more background information on this last topic, but I couldn't find it quickly for you.

      Re: Router Use

      Scubbie,

Thanks also for your feedback. I've generated the username and password for the "spare" sky router and made a note of this. I'll do same for "in-service" sky router when I see him tomorrow as this will be the details pertinent to him. What steps do I need to take to get these details into the "spare" router ??

      Re: Router Use

The sign-in details & password are only useful for a non-sky router to be used on Sky BB. You can't change the sign-in details on a Sky router unless you change the firmware.

So if your friend were to purchase an ADSL2+ compatible router from some where, then he could use these details.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB

      Re: Router Use

      Scubbie,

Noted. Therefore, even though the "inservice" sky router will have a different username and password to the "spare" sky router, using the "spare", if needed, won't be a problem and should work when connected ??

      Re: Router Use

Provided the your 'spare' router hasn't been locked out (which I inderstand is rare), it should work without any problems.

      Re: Router Use

      Scubbie,

Sounds good. The proof in the pudding will be tomorrow when I swap out to test.

Thanks very much for all your replies

Update 12/02/11 1506GMT: Unit swapped out and tested OK. Left with friend as a spare.
