      Extremely Slow Speeds

      Hi all,
Basically, I'm just reposting what I posted here: Sky Broadband? - Steam Users' Forums
They suggested I post here also. To quote:

      Hi everyone,

Ok so basically, I live in the UK, in a large town called Ipswich, about an hour and a half away from London. My household currently uses Sky internet as our ISP, an "advertised" up to 20mbps connection (http://www.sky.com/shop/bundles-offe...and/?DCMP=KNC-).

However, there's a problem. On speedtest.net, I ping about 50ms to other UK servers, and struggle to reach 2.6mbps download rate (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1148781810.png). I know that internet speed is generally not as advertised, due to distance from the exchange and so on, but I live in the centre of a large town? I can't be THAT far away...I should be able to get at least 5mbps shouldn't I?

And the worst part is, I get ~300kbps download from steam, if I'm lucky (usually around 250). To me, this is f*cking appauling. If I piggyback my neighbour's wireless (on virgin) I get about 1.2mbps download from steam, and about 5mbps on speedtest.net.

So my question is, is anyone else on sky broadband? Is it as dire as I find it? Or is there soemthing wrong with my connection?

      Regards,
      Jack.
Is there anything I can do to improve my connection? It really is pretty terrible. Other people are getting download speeds of 2mbps from steam (with the same package), whereas I have 300kbps if I'm lucky.

      Thanks in advance,
      Jack.

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

Are you getting 300kbps or 300kBps? There's a difference and if it's the latter that's normal for a 3Mbps connection

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

Well the screenshot I posted says 3042kbps.

But it's advertised up to 20mb. And I've worked out that I live less than a mile away from the exchange. My neighbour is getting 7000-10000kbps.

I don't think its normal tbh

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

You might live less than a mile straight line but who knows which way your line goes. The 38db attenuation would lead to more like a 3 mile line

3042kbps will transfer at around 300kB/s so you need to make sure you're understanding the speeds correctly

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

I understand the speeds. I'm just wondering why they're so low o_o

So you're saying there's likely nothing I can do about it? I just live in a bad area...despite my next door neighbour receiving double my speed?

      Doesn't really make sense.

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

Firstly, reboot your router - you've been connected for 675hrs going by that shot!!

Secondly, how are you setup at your end? How many socket are in use? Are all used sockets filtered? Are you running off an extension?

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

To my knowledge, my sky router is plugged into a splitter (or a filter, whatever it's called) which my phone is also plugged into, and my computer is plugged into the router.

Sure, I'll restart it. But I'd be surprised if it improved anything; I've had speeds of this magnitude since I've been using Sky.

      Re: Extremely Slow Speeds

You'll need to be more specific with the set-up.

How many telephone sockets do you use?
Is there a microfilter connected directly into each telephone socket in use, ensuring that nothing before the filter?
Is the router connected to the master socket or an extension socket?
Are you using the short grey dsl cable that Sky provided, or running an extension telephone cable to the router?
Do you have Sky tv connected to any telephone sockets?
Do you have a test socket?
