Question Wont Connect any faster than 896kbps

When I reboot the router it attempts to connect. I get a flashing amber dsl light then it goes solid green. The download connection speed will vary from 700kbps to 2900kbps. If it connects at faster than 900kbps then it drops off after 5 seconds and the dsl light goes off.

I then retries after 60 seconds and the same thing happens.

If it attempts to connect slower than 900kbps then it works EVERY time and stays up forever (well, until I reboot the router).

I should be getting 2.4mbs link but it just won't authenticate over 900kbps

Is anyone else having this problem.

P.S If I use the master socket it ALWAYS connects over 1088kbps and thus NEVER authticates becasue it's too fast.

It's been like this for weeks and sky are flumuxed.

      Hi vin

Can you post your router stats please

If you are not sure how to do this loginto the router by clicking on this link

      http://192.168.0.1 A little box will pop-up
      the default username/password is admin/sky
then you will be on the Router Status page look at the bottom and you will see a button Show Statistics click on that and a pop-up window will give you all the info you need.
      Ray

Some Advice.. Its always advisable to inform your old ISP as soon as you have migrated that you have moved.

vin, you really are on the margin there, your attenuation is 63.5, you must have a very long line, what do you mean it doesnt authenticate because its too fast?

Just Cause, what do you define as really bad download speeds, the stats look ok, i assume you are on the connect package judging by the upstream speed.

Yeah I am on connect. Common speeds when running a speed test are circa 300 down and almost always 373 up. Sometimes the download is circa 100kbps.

Very rarely do I get even 1Mb let alone the 5.5Mb the line would suggest.

Cheers for taking the time to reply by the way.

try downloading this and see what the speed is.
      ftp://mirror.ac.uk/sites/fedora.redh...i386-disc5.iso

speedtests have always been unreliable for me.

You would appear to be right. This is downloading at 459KB/sec.

It is wierd that all sites that I used to download content at high speeds before moving from BT to Sky are very slow by comparison.

Any ideas why? I have been clutching at straws clearing the DNS resolver cache etc. etc.

      Results

      508MB in 22 min 10 seconds.
      389KB/sec

That is what I would expect. Guess the speed test sites are worthless?

Why don't I get good transfer rates from sites I used to before migrating? Even web browsing can be labourious. Any ideas are appreciated.

I used to download from gametrailers.com (as an example) at 200KB/sec. I have tried this game trailer now http://www.gametrailers.com/player.p...pe=wmv&pl=game and it is trickling down at 30KB/sec

I know this isn't scientific but I have never had problems with this site or many others until I migrated to sky.

I was tslking to a t3 guy the other night and he was watching my line connect. He could see me connecting at fast speeds (1000 to 3000kbps) but the authentication at their side was failing and the dsl light goes of after 5 seconds. Evertime the connection was 900 or less it authenticated and stayed up.

      Really annoying
