Drats, the line drops are back

      Scubbie: RouteStats Lite traces attached.

I've noticed that I almost always experience it directly after a reboot / power cycle of the router. After the problem last night, it's been running fine all day but if I reboot the problem will come back for a few hours then go away again.

So I'll leave it running until 20:00 when if it was a natural attenuation problem it's likely to have occured by then; reboot, then I'll see if at 20:01 the line starts dropping again.

      Re: Intermittent disconnections

It should be possible to leave your router on 24/7. I appreciate that some people like to save ús and switch it off over night or as a fire risk issue.

As far as the money is concerned, they actually don't use a lot of power.

Firmware updates are done over night.

Looking at your graphs though, it looks very much like you have a problem with your telephone line somewhere.

Did you change the Black PSU/transformer when you changed the router?

Also could you try plugging the PSU into a different mains socket and ensure that the lead is securely plugged into the back of the router?

Finally, could you confirm whether you are using the master socket, test socket or an extension?

If you have no extensions, could you please ensure that you are using the test socket for the next 24 hours and monitor the connection please.

If you do have some extensions, could you use the test socket and run the tests for an hour or two, just to see it things improve.

      Thanks Scubbie

I was rebooting to try and find any sort of pattern that causes a disconnect - I normally leave it running 24x7

Anyway 24hrs without a problem so far

Upstream is back to it's old (and stable) 31.5 db value

I saw some workmen with what looked to be a reel of fibre pushing it through a GPO manhole this afternoon, looks like FTTC (BT) cometh soon

      Re: Intermittent disconnections

The problem unfortunately reoccurred, on Tuesday Sky sent out a BT Openreach Engineer who installed a new NTE Master and ADSL Faceplate Splitter. (I wasn't there at the time), but he tested the line with his ADSL modem and said it wasn't dropping for him, then when he plugged the new D-Link it started dropping. So, Sky sent another D-Link out.

On Thursday my connection speed had dropped by 1.6 Mbps, and in the afternoon the second new D-Link arrived:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3104 kbps 864 kbps
      Line Attenuation 53.5db 30.5db
      Noise Margin 7.5db 8.0db

I've tried all three routers and they all have the same stats.

The line once again seems to be 'stable' but this is mostly due to the reduction in speed, when I look at RouterStats I can see large 5 db swings in Noise Margin - is that normal???

Would you say Sky / BT consider this to be 'fixed' or is it reasonable if I ask them to keep looking into the root cause?

      Re: Intermittent disconnections

If you still suffer disconnections from here on in, then I can imagine the only other thing that can be done now is a tie pair shift - once that's been done, then that's everything exhausted really.

No, that is a bit much over a short period. A fluctuation of 1 or 2 dbs between day and night is normal on a lot of lines, but not 5dbs over minutes. Does this carry on right through 24 hours or does it settle down for a period then start again?

      Re: Intermittent disconnections

Hurray it might actually be fixed!

Had another BT Engineer around, he checked the BT66B, jelly crimps, internal wiring, NTE Master Socket, Openreach Faceplate, routers (*3) and Street Cabinet giving all a clean bill of health - he then disappeared up to the exchange. Haven't seen him since but speeds back to 4.5 Mbps, and noise margin is as still as a millpond.

So he might well have done a tie pair shift.

Thanks everyone for the help + Sky Support + BT
