Mega slow speeds
Ok folks - here's my problem.
My girlfriend and I moved into a new build property recently.
We had our phone line activated in October by BT, with our broadband switching on I think sometime after in November.
We were given a DLink DSL 2640s modem/router.
Postcode is ML12FD.
We have a friend who stays on the same street about 100 yards away or so, and he's managing to get speeds of approx 1.5meg to 2meg.
By contrast, we're getting about 0.5. Today has been worse than usual - 297kbps.
Now, obviously we've been in contact with Sky about this, as the service is more or less unuseable. We've been escalated to the Consumer Solutions team to try and resolve things.
We've had two Openreach engineers out to test things out as well.
First engineer was out, and he essentially was testing the line, and resolving what appeared to be a problem at the exchange with a network card or something. Anyway, after he had done his work, there were apparently no line faults etc, but as the problem has remained.
After the first engineer had done his stuff, I phoned Sky, and they sent me out a new modem/router.
Now this is when possibly a key observation was made.
Previously when I phoned up Sky, and told them of my issue, they would change some speed settings etc, which would seem to work. But as soon as I hung up the phone, the speed would drop.
This happened before they sent out the first engineer.
When they sent out the new modem, I plugged in, and things seemed to maintain ok for a couple of days.
But for some reason I'd forgotten to plug in our phone again for these two days.
It seemed that shortly after I plugged in the phone, the speeds dropped.
So...
Yesterday's Openreach engineer, actually changed the cable completely. All suppsedly fine. Using his laptop which I think had a built in modem, he said he was managing to get 2meg+, but as soon as he tested speeds via our Sky modem, speeds plummeted back down to 0.5meg.
Today, I've disconnected the router for about an hour, plugged back in without attaching the phone, and speeds have jumped from the 297kbps we had earlier on, up to 832kbps.
Using his laptop, he was

Re: Mega slow speeds
First check if you have an NTE5 master socket. If you have, remove the lower faceplate and plug the router in there and take the stats, post them here. Unfortunately many new builds have an external (X)NTE which does not allow access to the Test socket. If this is the case, plug into the first socket on the circuit and take your stats from there.

Re: Mega slow speeds
Here's my info...
As you can see, speed is up to 1.2meg, as I've disconnected the phone.
I think as soon as I plug in the phone, the speed will drop.

Re: Mega slow speeds
You are on a very long line and to be honest, you will be unlikely to get any more. What you can do is call Sky and ask them if they will try your line on G.DMT which may suit your line better.
If you are having problems when you plug the phone in that suggests a dodgy filter. You could try plugging in a second filter onto the first one and plug the phone into that, or you could buy a good quality filter. It may of course be a fault in your phone, to rule that out try another phone.

Re: Mega slow speeds
I take it you or the Openreach engineers have tried connecting you router straight to the Test Socket (the socket behind the master socket - take the two screws out remove face gently and there you will see it)
With that line attenuation don't except much more speed from ADSL.
Considering you are in a newly built property I doubt you have Virgin Media's fibre option... If you need more speed your going to have to wait for BT to enable your exchange for FTTC or hope Virgin Media stroll into your area, or try BE broadband's line bonding solution

Re: Mega slow speeds
Folks, I know the line length is long, but like I said, speeds have been dropping down to below 0.5meg. Like I said, the OR guy was getting over 2 meg, but as soon as he plugged in the Sky router it went down to the 0.5meg mark etc. Like I said, earlier this morning, it had dropped to below 0.3meg.
So, you suggest, new filter, plus maybe try a new phone, and ask Sky to switch me on to G.DMT?
