      Slow Broadband

      Hi

Recently I logged into my sky router to find out that the download speed was 900kb/s. I changed a few wires around and eventually got it up to 5248mb. When I go to an online speed check website (I've tried a couple), it says my download speed is 0.48mb/s on any computer in the house (even one wired directly to the router).

Why is this so low when the speed on the sky router page has now jumped so much?

Also I've been experiencing lag when playing on a PS3. I've done the DNS and assigned a static IP. It's currently connect wirelessly. It works absolutely fine but when anyone else is on a computer at the same time, it lags like crazy (especially if a Youtube video is loading).

What would be the cheapest way to get around this problem? (Not including kicking everyone off the internet)
I've been searching and have come across routers with QOS which mine doesn't appear to have. Will a router with QOS definitely cure this problem? And can anyone recommend a cheap one. Does it connect to the current sky router and everyone connects to it? Or does it replace the sagem unit completely?

      Thanks
      Jake

      1. Gaming on Wi-Fi is a BIG no no - as soon as anyone else goes online it'll grind to a halt. Look into Homeplugs/Powerline networking
      2. Can you post your current stats and how you're currently setup in the house (sockets in use, etc)

      Re: Slow Broadband

Thanks for the reply, will have a look into homeplugs.

      The set up is:

Downstairs - router is plugged into the test socket via a filter. This improved the speed on the router webpage. One PC is then connected direct to the router via an ethernet cable. There's also one PS3 connected wirelessly and a Sky HD box plugged into another phone socket.

Upstairs - 2 Sky boxes connected to the same phone socket, one more PS3 connected wirelessly. There's also 1 laptop and one macbook sometimes connected wirelessly.

Stat's from the Router page are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4992 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 26.5 db
Noise Margin 15.1 db 25.0 db

      We're on Sky's up to 8mb plan.

      Re: Slow Broadband

You're on Sky Connect - SNRs currently profiled to 15db and more than likely your IP profile is still low. When did you actually make the change in set-up or fix the wiring?7

      Go to: Test Result

When it asks for a username, it's the mac address found on the bottom of the router with @skydsl on the end. i.e. 00F2349F03@skydsl

Paste up the results, including the IP profile.

      Re: Slow Broadband

I changed the wiring late last night. Before I did it, the 15db reading was at 20db.

Just done the test and here's what it came up with:

Will 2 PS3's struggle even if they're wired into the internet? When the Sky router down-stream figure was reading 800kb/s, one PS3 was still playable. I'm hoping now it's at 5000kb, 2 should be fine?

      Re: Slow Broadband

      1. Your IP profile is currently at half a meg, this will increase in the next 72hrs assuming nothing happens to the connection speed
      2. Connect is the worst BB package in the country and is severely throttled during peak hours
