Sky Broadband drops out several times every day

Hi all, new to Sky broadband having had it installed back in December. The last 2 -3 weeks I have had lots of connection drops at various times of the day with the green internet light changing to orange. This usually only last for a few seconds or a minitue of two at the most. When it comes back on I and get the pop-up message

A user name and password are being requested by http://192.168.0.1. The site says: "DSL Router"

I then usually have to shut down any open browsers and start again. This is also badly affecting online play of video games as I keep getting thrown out.

I have tested my router statistics and get the following results

      Router Status
      Firmware Version 2.8Sky
      ADSL Port
      MAC Address e8:be:81:6a:d3:c4
      IP Address 2.125.59.160
      Network Type MER
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.192
      Gateway IP Address
      Domain Name Server 90.207.238.97 90.207.238.99
      LAN Port
      MAC Address e8:be:81:6a:d3:c2
      IP Address
      DHCP enable
      IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023o.d20h
      Modem Status Up
      DownStream Connection Speed 5017
      UpStream Connection Speed 769
      VPI 0
      VCI 40
      Wireless Port
      Name (SSID) SKY54210
      Region Europe
      Current Channel 1
      Wireless AP enable
      Broadcast Name SKY54210

I took my IP address out as I dont know if I should be protecting those?

      Under statistics I get

      System Up Time: 0:54:00
      Port Status
TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN 40392
      MER 65620 0 0 0 0:16:10
      LAN 75205 48135 0 0 0 0:54:00
      WLAN 795 290 0 0 0 0:53:33
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5017 kbps 769 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 6.9 db 8.3 db

Sorry this is all jumbled, cannot seem to tidy it up effectively.

Can anybody help as this is getting worse by the day. It is now difficult to get an hours uninterrupted use. I am not very savy PC wise so please assume in any answer that I dont know much!

A quick edit to apologise for the bad spelling in the title. Have lost connection 4 times just trying to post this message!

re: Sky Broadband drops out several times every day

These issues are normally due to your internal wiring/setup.

Do you have a TEST socket? if you do, connect the douter to it using the ADSL filter and get the stats again, this should give you the best connection you can get in your property.

If the problem goes away when using the TEST socket then you know that the issues are with the wiring and we can then look at these.

How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket

Also, ensure you have an ADSL filter fitted into every phone socket in the house as the very FIRST thing connected into it, don't confuse any twin splitters etc for an ADSL filter, the filter will have a phone and a router port in it.

re: Sky Broadband drops out several times every day

I can carry out this test using the short cable and a laptop but as my problem is intermitent I am not sure that it will show up any problem. Will the numbers be different for the test if I do have a wiring problem?

I do have an ASDL filter in every phone line.

I should also mention that with my previous ISP I NEVER had a single connection issue with the same wiring in place.

Yes the stats should change which will indicate if there is a fault, the sync speed may stay the same.

Also, are you connecting via wireless as this could also be the problem, if you are then you shoulc try a wire and see if that cures it.

      Network Type MER
I would guess you have the Sagem router and not the DG834GT as your Profile says. Your problem may be the fact that you are on the MER Network as opposed to PPPoA. Several members have been having problems with this. You could try forcing it back to PPPoA by holding in the reset button for 50 seconds. See if it changes and makes any difference.

re: Sky Broadband drops out several times every day

I will try the reset. My Router is Sagem. Will change my profile to match. Although we do use laptops our main pc which is wired is the same. The internet connection is lost as the green light changes to orange for half a minute or more at a time.

If youare loosing the internet connection then you need to post your TEST socket stats and check the things I mentioned in my first post re filters etc.

re: Sky Broadband drops out several times every day

Thanks Smithy. I may have to attempt this tomorrow as there is a big bit of furniture that will need moving in order to remove the front plate of the test socket.

The reset has stabalised things for the time being with just one small disconnect in the last 3 hours.

Thankyou for all the help so far.

Did it change your network type?
