      Unstable since going on MER

For 18 months I've had rock steady performance at 7mb downstream - no failures at all. Now since being on MER every other day my speed re-synchs to something near 4.9 - 5.3mb or thereabouts. I can reboot and get back up to 7Mb as per the stats below. Anyone any ideas why this should be?

      Thanks Terry

Probably coincidence as a change in authentication wouldn't cause speed to drop. How are you set up?

Thanks - router plugged directly into BT filtered faceplate hence no internal wiring or other filter issues. Ethernet to iMAC

When I was on BT I could never get anything stable above 6Mb or so but Sky seemed to hold at 7Mb for the first 18 months at least. Sky did call out of the blue the other week and said that they wanted to try and increase this but I declined knowing the limitations of the line (I'm nearly 4km from the exchange) I didn't want to risk running into more trouble than it was worth, being happy with 7Mb.

Could try your test socket and see what happens

There is a post on the Forum which suggests a hard reset of the router can return it to PPPoA. I am not sure why this should be, but if you want to try, push a pin into the reset hole and hold it there for 50 seconds. If you have any personal settings like port forwarding or changed pass keys, make sure you save your settings first as these will be lost.

Have tried that, just the same (re-synch) with very little difference in speed between test and filtered port on the ADSL faceplate. I'll probably give them a call later tonight. One other question - if I'm not going to be using BB for about 3 weeks would it be best to power down the router or leave connected?

Unplug it. The only time this would have a bad effect is if DLM were running. Many switch their router off every night with no consequences.

I'd suggest just to keep it turned on as normal, but it isn't going to make much difference.

      Thanks

Yes I had seen that but wanted to try and avoid that if possible as I assumed at some point it will go back to MER. Do you know if the hard reset loses all the wireless settings (i.e. network name, security code and permitted devices as well as the login password etc.) I have a backed up the settings in the .conf file - if I reload from that will that affect the the PPPoA/MER aspect?
