    Slow Speeds - New Router?

This is a discussion on Slow Speeds - New Router? within the Sky Broadband help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Personally, I'd remove that horrid box and fit an NTE5 there...

Re: Slow Speeds - New Router?

The BT engineer came round, he said that a different engineer needs to come round, called an SFI engineer and I need to contact sky for this. However before he left He sorted out my complete mess of wires.

I had two main cables coming from the pole outside to my house, serving two different phone numbers. He switched the two main cables and relocated my master socket making it the one I originally reffered to as the alternate socket. Having done this my oringal master socket is now just and extension socket.

Anyway in terms of my broaband, my stats have decreased and infact are continuing to decrease across the day, here are my current stats, (bear in mind that the speed was 5070kbps, right after the engineer had finished):

Connection Speed 4873 kbps 493 kbps
      Line Attenuation 31.0db 17.3db
      Noise Margin 6.7db 8.0db

This is starting to feel like a lost cause.

Also the new line the engineer put in is not the old two pair, "figure of eight" cable but has a core that looks like this:

Now your home wiring is sorted out you have a better chance of getting the fault on the line fixed. You will have to wait till the broadband engineer gets to you, you may need to keep badgering Sky to get one out. Emphasise to them that it is a broadband engineer you need and not an ordinary BTO one.

That looks like the newer type drop cable, which I think has 4 cores and 3 steel support wires.

Re: Slow Speeds - New Router?

I finally get throught to sky CST, who by the way are really friendly and appreciate my issue. They arranged for a broadband SFI engineer to visit my house on Wednesday. Since my wiring has been sorted out, what kind of issue am I expecting.

I have noticed my line speed gradually deterioating, its currently synced at 4.4 Mb/s

That may be a blessing in disguise, it could be the fault is getting worse, which should make it easier to find.

Let's hope the engineer who comes really knows his stuff and gets you sorted out. Who knows, it may be as simple as a dodgy exchange card which can be fixed quite easily.

The SFI engineer came round and he replace some wiring at the pole, and now I get 8.1Mb/s, here are my stats:

Connection Speed 8191 kbps 606 kbps
      Line Attenuation 31.0db 17.3db

Yes, you can now call Sky tell them the engineer has fixed your line, could they now either put DLM back on or configure your line manually. You should now get 13-14 Mb.

Re: Slow Speeds - New Router?

I phoned sky and got through to CST, they intially uncapped me to 15Mb/s but I forgot to ask them to uncap my upstream rate. So I phoned again and a different CST member said my line has errors and she was going to drop my downstream rate and remove my upstream cap. These are my stats:

Connection Speed 1375 kbps 989 kbps
      Line Attenuation 31.0db 17.3db
      Noise Margin 35.2db 8.0db

why has my downstream rate been dropped to 1.3Mb/s?

Re: Slow Speeds - New Router?

They're talking rubbish, errors will always form on the line. It's whether it causes the line to drop out or not that's the issue. That's been capped far too low

Re: Slow Speeds - New Router?

Well I phoned, yet again, and now they did a manual line profiling and these are my current stats:

Connection Speed 15373 kbps 989 kbps
      Line Attenuation 31.0db 17.4db
      Noise Margin 7.2db 10.0db

Looks as stable as can be. Thank you everyone who helped me resolve this issue, finally after weeks of phone calls and 8 pages of posts on this forum the line is fixed and my house rewired. Thank you, the speed difference is definitely noticeable
