Surprise increase of Line attenuation over night

      Hello,

A bit of history, my line always sync below the 4900kbps with the Noise Margin around 7db for the last 9 months, I had sky run line test in the beginning and they claim that was the max speed my line can support.

I had to reboot my router last night and it was around 4300kbps and 7.5db. This morning in my usually attempt to get max sync I got these interesting results

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4991 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 21.8 db
Noise Margin 18.2 db 11.5 db

Now, my question is could I get higher down sync i I ask sky to re run their line tests? or am I still still dreaming and the noise margin will drop back tonight...

So far its stayed at 18db for the last 2 hours.

Much higher, chances are you might be on DLM so leave it a few days as an increase in attenuation normally means a switch to ADSL2+

Thanks, I going to leave the router up for the next few days and see how things progress.

Your previous posts suggested that there was a fault with your external line or at the exchange. It looks like this has been fixed so you should now get a speed more like your attenuation suggests. I would phone Sky now and ask them to configure your line. If DLM is running, good and well, let it do its job. If it is not they will be able to configure your line to give you the best stable speed possible.

Re: Surprise increase of Line attenuation over night

The link dropped a hour ago and I am back to where I was,

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4411 kbps 593 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 21.7 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 8.0 db

I am sure that sky is withholding on my link one way or another,

ahh well I'm off to BE once the contracts up in June

How, or even why, would Sky manipulate a huge change in noise margins?

You have some kind of fault ongoing - are those stats from the test socket with, preferably, a different filter and no extension cables running to the router?

There is no way Sky can reduce your noise margin without increasing your speed. Likewise they cannot increase your speed without reducing your noise margin. It looks like you definitely have a fault on your line. It may be no more than a loose joint at the pole or cabinet. What you can try is bringing up your Stats page and make a call on your phone. Watch the noise margin, if it rises, you have a HR fault on your line.

Re: Surprise increase of Line attenuation over night

Stats this morning, I have not resync yet.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4411 kbps 593 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 21.7 db
Noise Margin 19.5 db 17.0 db

Made a call from the home line.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4411 kbps 593 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 21.7 db
Noise Margin 19.4 db 16.5 db

not going to resync, just going to keep an eye on the noise margin for a while.

I would phone Sky and ask them to configure your line while your noise margin is high. If they do this and get you up to a reasonable speed, there is more chance of getting the fault fixed should your speed drop again.

      Stats this evening

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4411 kbps 593 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 21.7 db
Noise Margin 5.8 db 8.5 db
