Sky telling me i'm getting 18mbps when only getting approx 9

      hi guys,

just been going around in circles with sky regarding this

      according to them i'm getting

      DownStream Connection Speed 18008
      UpStream Connection Speed 1150

When i go and check speedtest.net it comes back as 8.11 and thinkbroadband is around the same. They have ruled these out as rubbish sites and ony go via my postcode. When i said how it knows my ip address he said they still not a proper reading.

I have access to newsgroups and they should max out my line this comes back as 1.1mb's (11mb)

Any idea what might be causing this? I have texted the main telephone box too.

All i have connected atm is my pc directly into the router

I'm around 100m away from the exchange and around 6 months ago was getting 18mb (2.1 on newsgroups) for 3 years solid.

This is a throughput issue. Your downstream sync is at 18mbps.

Connect via ethernet cable from the router to the computer and run another speed test at Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester. If you're still not getting a higher reading, then boot into safe mode with networking and re-run another speed test.

With a sync of 18mb, you should be getting around 15 in throughput....with 19995kbps sync my line maxes out at 17mb.

      Tried factory resetting the router?

I wouldn't trust the speedtest on here, it just gave me 12.2mb, whilst using speedtest.net (manchester) gave me 16.8mb

Any speedtester can be unreliable. But, with the amount of bad readings I've seen from speedtest.net, I don't trust it at all.

Your best bet is to download from somewhere like Microsoft - somewhere where you can max out a download

Other question is where abouts are you? North Wales/North West are having speed issues but that only tends to affect peak time speeds...

South Wales, tried MS and getting around 10mb.

I know newsgroups will max your connection off, its just Sky wont do anything as their end tells them and the router i am getting 18mb.

hi guys, please remember that although your sync speeds may be high there is a huge potential for errors which is something that you wouldn't be able to see - crc and header errors will cause you the biggest problems but fec errors if there are enough of them will cause a throughput issue too. Sometimes... however odd it way sound you are better off getting your line capped to a slightly lower speed than your line can attain to remove the errors which in turn will raise your throughput speed. hope this helps. if you need this doing give tech a line and ask for cst to cap the line slightly.

If you work for CST then that's terrible advice, I'd never have said such a thing in the 3 years I worked there
