Want to set up Sky Broadband with a Belkin wireless router

      Hello folks,

I've recently moved to a newly-built three-storey house and have opted to continue using Sky for my broadband and TV needs. Having previously used them for a number of years I was pleased with the service, though had a few concerns about the router I was using in the previous house.

To cut a long story short it was one of Sky's Netgear models (can't remember wihich one) and seemed to have a mind of its own, severing the connection whenever it felt like it and requiring an unuaually high number of re-boots. This, together with the fact that I'm now in a bigger property, led me to decide to go with a more powerful 'N' spec modem/router as oppose to the standard 'G' spec supplied by Sky.

I'm due to "go live" with my phone and broadband on 20th January but am not entirely sure how to set up my home wireless network; it was very simple before: put CD in computer, follow instructions, link one's wireless things to the router and away you go! I hope it can be as simple this time but I fear this may not be the case.

My question, therefore, is simple: can someone please point me in the direction of an idiots' guide that walks me through the process to connect an alternate modem/router to Sky broadband?

      Thanks.

Firstly, bare in mind using a non-Sky router is against T&Cs so Sky could technically cut you off (but they haven't as yet)

Secondly, read these threads (depending on the Sky router you have):

Thanks. I understand the risks but appreciate the reminder.

I'll see what kind of wireless signal strength I get with the "standard" Sky modem/router and take it from there. The main problem I foresee is that the modem/router will be on the ground floor whilst my workhorse PC is located on the top floor and will need to be connected wirelessly, unless there's another way of connecting it to 'tinternet (there's an inactive BT socket in the same room)?

      You can either:

      1. Run Ethernet to the PC(s) in question
      2. Look into Homeplugs (probably easier)

I'd need a pretty long ethernet cable and would have to drill through a number of ceilings/floors. Can't see the missus going for that one.

What is a homeplug and is does it require much to set up?

Homeplugs, or Powerline Networking, uses internal mains wiring as network cable. You have one adapter by the router connected by Ethernet and another elsewhere in the property (on the same ring main) connected to your device and they transmit the signal. Saves on running new cables and is a much better solution to using (crappy) Wi-Fi

Re: Want to set up Sky Broadband with a Belkin wireless router

Thanks for the advice. That definitely sounds like the best way to go. I could return my hideously expensive Belkin router and pick up a couple of homeplugs and, hopefully, get the result I was after.
