I've seen both SVBN help speeds and hinder speeds. It's luck of the draw. In order to confirm whether you're on SVBN, do the following:

Open command prompt (start > all programs > accessories > command prompt)
      Type - tracert bbc.co.uk

Reply with the 'hops', specifically the second hop.

I moved back from Sky Talk to BT phone some years ago. For me the reason was Sky changing their type of connection - I forget theexact details. The net effect was that I was about to lose the ability to use dial prefixes to route over certain carriers eg I had a special code so that my company picked up the call cost, 1820 to route calls over BT and the 18185 for cheap mobile calls.

Also the cost of 0870 and 0845 calls on Sky were much larger than BT and they are now free on BT

If you dial 150 and you are on a BT line you will be greeted with 'Welcome to BT', even ifyou have Sky Talk. If you are on SVBN, with Sky rental you will get the Sky greeting.
