      Question Line Attenuation

      Hi there.

Recently my Unlimited Sky Broadband 20MB (part of a tv and phone bundle) connection was enabled, but I expected more than 4Mb/s. From what I read here, low line attenuation would mean a high download speed and apparently mines reasonably low. I donít want to make any assumptions as I wouldnít know what Iím talking about. Hereíre my router stats.

      Downstream: 4096 kbps
      Upstream: 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 db Downstream; 10.5 db Upstream
Noise Margin 23.1 db Downstream; 14.0 db Upstream

Is all I can expect from my connection 4Mb/s?
      Cheers.

      Re: Line Attenuation

You are correct that low attenuation typically means high sync speed. With your attenuation, between 16-20mbps could be achievable. Dynamic Line Management (DLM) will have been requested on your line at this point. It doesn't look like it has started yet, but shall do so in the next few days at most, in which the speed shall be optimised over an up to ten day period.

      Re: Line Attenuation

After two weeks, Iím still falling short of at least 16MB. Is there anything I can do to improve my speed? New router stats:

Connection Speed: 9215 kbps downstream; 852 kbps upstream
Line Attenuation: 21.0 db downstream; 9.6 db upstream
Noise Margin: 19.1 db downstream; 8.0 db upstream

      Thanks

Ring Sky on 08442410515 and explain that DLM has left your speed capped.

      Re: Line Attenuation

How do I explain my situation? They seem unwilling to do anything about it. I have called them and said that my current speed is only half of what I should be getting according to the router statistics. The response was that what Iím getting is very good already and that 6.5MB is average or something.

      Re: Line Attenuation

Ring up, tell them DLM has run and left your line capped at a low speed and you can tell from your router statistics that is can go a lot faster because of your noise margin. If the tier 1 does not understand what the stats are indicating then ask for a team leader or to be transfered to CST or cancellations. If you tell them you are cancelling due to the way your call is being handled you may force the issue.
One thing though, post up a new set of stats so we can see if they did anything at all.

      Re: Line Attenuation

Interesting that they said they didn't do anything yet your speed has doubled. Your line can give more though, might be worth a call to find out if someone has reset the DLM service on your line and if it's running again

      Re: Line Attenuation

I think it doubled during DLM, but I should be expecting 16-20MB. I called sky around 3 weeks after my connection was enabled, my speed doubled during the first week.

      Re: Line Attenuation

My downstream speed in now 15285 kbps after calling sky, but my noise margin has gone down to 8.4db from 20db. Does that mean that 15285 kbps is the best I can get?
