Help, wireless probs after Sky 'tweaking'

      Help,

I've been having seemingly random disconnects for a couple of months after years of no problems.

Sky technical support replied finally to my emails 6 days ago and "re-configured the settings on your broadband line in order to stabilise the connection".

Since then the noise margin has gone up from under 6 to 11. However the wireless signal seems to have been screwed up.

Next to the router I get full speed but in the lounge on the floor below it is now 0.5MB/s. The strength is 2 out of 5 bars on the laptop and the connection drops after a few minutes. My xbox can't connect to the router even though it can 'see' it. (I did try the laptop next to the router the first few days I had the probs but the speed then was still 0.5, can't explain why it is better now next to it now...)

The signal has been fine for years on this floor. I haven't made any changes to my tel set up etc,my neighbours haven't changed their wireless settings and there are no other strong signals on my channel. This happened only when sky did some tweaking 6 days ago.

I cant move the router as there are no sockets nearby.

Any ideas?, been waiting for days for Sky to get back to me...

The only tweaking that can effect your wireless signal is changing the router channels. The wireless and your internet connection are not really connected, they are individual parts of your router, changing one does not effect the other.

Xmas is always a bad time for broadband, wireless connections especially. If you haven't done so, download Inssider from the link below and use it to discover the channels in your area. Set yours to a channel as far from those in use as possible.

Apart from trying another router, if you have one, there is not much else you can do except wait till the Xmas lights are switched off and things get back to normal.

It's the old 'tinsel can knock out your wireless' scenario as well as a lot more dodgy power supplies from Xmas trees causing possible REIN issues...

Bit of a co-incidence that it happened the same day as Sky changed the settings though? And never had these probs in the previous years with the same neighbours... and I've not even put my Xmas decs up yet...
Did check the channels - no interference there...

Things change, they may have their lights on or even changed their router. Your own router may be feeling its age.

Do you mean you are in a clear slot with no channels with 2 numbers of yours?

Re: Help, wireless probs after Sky 'tweaking'

Realised that they had changed my router channel back to the default channel. Put it back to 13 and the signal is fine now!

Would have been nice for the techs to leave it be....

Had one disconnect so far this morning with the internet light going back to orange for no reason again so will see how it goes.

Sky can't remotely change your router's channel. Firmware upgrades and/or resets can.

Re: Help, wireless probs after Sky 'tweaking'

Are you sure? The evening they did the tweaking I tried to log into the router page but had a message that said that someone was already logged in. If they can log in then surely they can change the channel? It can't have changed on its own...
May get more of an answer when they get back to me on the disconnects.

Re: Help, wireless probs after Sky 'tweaking'

If you log into the router using wireless or cable, and then do not log out properly, if you then try and log in using the other method (wireless if you were using cable, or cable if you were using wireless) the router thinks someone else is already logged in

A reset can also do that as it may have reassigned the PC with a different IP address and it's expecting the instructions to come from somewhere else.
