really bad speeds on sky unlimited

ive been surfing away perfectly, with no problems on the max package until the last few days.
now surfing is really painful, on any browser ive tried Firefox, IE and chrome, and all have the same results. if i download a file from a server e.g. rapidshare, then this is fine via a download manager. but any type of surfing has become so slow. any ideas, what i can check for? i tried a few pingtests from pingtest.net, and the average came back as 600ms!

took a snapshot of speeds from the router, but these look ok to me:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9215 kbps 800 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.5 db 15.2 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 9.0 db

Speed is not bad, but you should be getting nearer 16Mbps, try connecting to the test socket and retaking your stats.

The usual question, are you using wireless or ethernet? If you are using wireless download InSSider from the link below, use it to discover the channels in use in your area, set your router channel to one as far from those in use as possible. No.13 is often a good bet.

If you are using ethernet, start in Safe Mode with Networking and test your speed here - Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester

Strangely, I think you also may be on g.dmt as opposed to adsl2plus...

Are you still using the v1 netgear? If so, try getting your detailed stats from:

      Mel's Notes: Sky Netgear DG834GT-1skuk

Include all of the info, including errors.

Re: really bad speeds on sky unlimited

i am running direct (ethernet), and i think the original v1 netgear? (had it for nearly 5 years).
ran the link and got the following results (aint got a clue what any of it means!)
funnily enough, the speeds have somehow just gone up for the first time in a few days!!
      anyhow, results:

Re: really bad speeds on sky unlimited

Some errors on that line - you should be able to get a good bit more speed. Strange that the pwr readings are pretty low, also. If you've had higher speed previously, then I'd be inclined that it may be the router at this point, but just to be sure:

How many telephone sockets do you use?
Is the router in the master or an extension socket?
Does the router run off any extension cables?
Does every socket in use have a filter connected directly into the socket, with nothing before it?
Is Sky tv plugged into any telephone socket? If so, is there a filter connected correctly to the socket?
Do you have a test socket?

Re: really bad speeds on sky unlimited

It looks like you have been up and running for about 13 days and sometime during that period you have picked up a lot of errors. That period may have been the reason for your slow throughput. I would advise you to resync the router by switching off the power for a minute then on again. This will clear your present errors, which may be misleading. Take your stats again after 24 hours and post them.

I would also advise, plugging into the Test socket using only the cable supplied by Sky and take and post your basic stats.

Re: really bad speeds on sky unlimited

This sounds like a similar problem that I am having

I have unlimited from sky and used to get download speeds of 2meg / sec. Then a few weeks ago it dropped to 300k.

I have called sky and they did a test and said that from there end they think I should be getting speeds of 10 meg.

I have a splitted into the master, which then goes to the router and then an ethernet cable to the pc. I have tried using a different ethernet cable and pc and tried using the other phone connection behind the behind the master.

Just had BT out today and they cannot see anything wrong with the line.

I can do some test using online broadband tests and it says that I should be getting a download speed of 4386. On my router IP, it has it at 5351.

I did a ping diagnostic and got

      ppp0 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol
