      Red face Understanding my router.

      Hi,

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I've no idea what I'm doing with this router, seriously.

Well I've managed to set it up and access the Internet but that's about it.

I'm not using the router wirelessly, does this mean other people can still piggy back my signal? If so how can I stop them?

I went to http://192.168.0.1 but not sure what I'm supposed to do once there.

I also went to Shields up and failed on the ping thing. Sorry, this is what it said:

Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.

This never happened when I used a modem, is it something I should be concerned about?

Basically, I'd love it if someone could help me make my computer/connection as safe/protected as possible. If this means directing me to somewhere I can read up on this (be nice) I'd much appreciate it.

      Thanks in advance, Linda

O.k Then, and welcome to the site.

First things first, if you are not using wireless, then disable it, the setting is in the set-up page, just un tick enable wireless and apply. The wireless led on the router will then extinguish.

For your Shields up problem, go to WAN set up and uncheck respond from ping.

      Re: Understanding my router.

Thank you Brian, I managed that. Not as stupid as I thought, well not with a little help.

I will want to eventually use the wireless connection though. How will I secure the connection so no one can piggy back it?

Also, how can I change the name from SSID so I can see the connection from my laptop? (If that's at all possible)

Sorry about my terminology, this is all new to me - like that makes a difference.

      Regards, Linda

      Re: Understanding my router.

The Sky routers are pretty secure with their default settings, so the thing to do is set up a wireless connection to your laptop using those to start with. It will make it much easer to help you. Once you are familiar with this, then you can change the settings if you wish
The password as it is set is all capital letters (so O is not zero, but a capital letter)
When you switch wireless back on, make sure the broadcast ESSD box is checked.

      Re: Understanding my router.

I would suggest changing the SSID because if you get another sky user in range, it makes it easier to spot which wifi network is yours when you are adding a new device to your network.

I would also suggest setting a longer, more secure WPA2 key, as the default keys are rather short.

If you are using a white sky (dg834gt) router, then it is very important to change the wpa-psk key to something other than the default.

      Re: Understanding my router.

      Thanks fuzzy logic

Where would I find info on how to do these things? I'm really scared in case I mess things up completely then have no broadband at all..

Oh and it's a Sagem router I'm using, a black one.

      Regards, Linda

P.S. I think I've found how to change the name and the network key.

I'd still appreciate any help in learning more about the router though. Meanwhile I'll go look for myself, lol, don't want you to think I'm completely lazy..
