New to sky, check of speed (still in DLM)

Hello, today the internet was activated, im on sky broadband unlimited
Just to see your opinions and thoughts of the speed i am getting as im curious, but im entering DLM.

I have the Sagem router and here is the stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4093 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 9.7 db
Noise Margin 8.5 db 16.9 db

I found these stats wierd, even though its the first day, i see that my upstream attenuation is reduced significantly, and my downstream increased slightly, why would this be?
For comparison here is the stats i was having before i was with sky and with a Belkin router:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4951 kbps 835 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.0 db 23.0 db
Noise Margin 8.8 db 9.0 db

Just wanted to hear your opinions on the difference of the noise margin and stuff like that, thanks lewis

It's probably just a starting position for DLM, you should see the noise margin reducing down towards 7db and you speed increasing. There is a massive difference between your up and downstream attenuation, how is your router connected to the line, how many sockets do you have on the line and what is in them and do you have a test socket anywhere?

Re: New to sky, check of speed (still in DLM)

Thanks for the reply PaulSky, Well the attenuation has been all over the place to be honest, so that might be a part of the DLM process, im not sure, but atm the stats go as:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4092 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 25.1 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 17.1 db

That looks better, but i used to have 39.5 to 41.0db attenuation, and the upstream used to be around 23.5db, before sky i was on the talktalk network, is it because they operate differently or something?

And in answer to your question, there is one master socket ( is the master socket the test socket im guessing? ) , and 2 extension sockets, it is currently plugged in the extension in my bedroom via filter then adsl cable, so there is the router plugged in on the extension in my bedroom, and the phone is plugged in, on the first extension via filter then phone etc
      Thanks lewis

There is always a difference between different routers reading the attenuation, but it is possible you have a dodgy Sky router. Your first priority should be plugging into your Test socket. If you are using the Sky filter I would advise taking it out and plugging in your old one. Some of the Sky supplied filters are, to say the least, not very efficient.

Click the link on Paul's post for info on the Test socket.

      Thanks for the reply Isitme,
I dont want to be turning the router on and off, because ive heard that it affects the DLM process and the sync speed you get, as it thinks it is disconnecting from noise, not sure though, and the other filter is a very very very old one though, speed touch , had it for like 4 - 5 years :/ , and yeah, you have to take the bottom half of the plate off , then test it in that, ill do that after the DLM has finished.

A Bt openreach engineer came round about 30 mins ago, he said the line is fine, so thats good news i guess
      Thanks Lewis

Doesn't mean a thing as far as broadband is concerned I'm afraid. All BTO check for is if the line is OK for voice, this does not mean it has not got faults which show up with broadband.

With regards unplugging during DLM, the odd disconnection is not going to make any difference. I am fairly sure if you plug into your Test socket you will find your figures improve. As they stand, you are not much above the default value for the downstream noise margin, which means you are not going to get a lot more. You should get anything between 7-10 Mb, depending on how good/bad your extension is.

There is no point in phoning Sky if the problem is in your internal wiring, they will do nothing for you. When DLM completes, post your stats here, from your normal position and from the Test socket, using only the cable supplied by Sky.
