When you get the faceplate, also buy one of these cheap IDC tools. It makes fixing the wires on the faceplate much easier.

Re: Been advised to seek help - So Help, please!

      Thanks guys,
I have just bought the XTE-2005 from ADSL Nation (I bought an IDC tool from Amazon!)
Now the fun begins, using the test socket improves my spped by 1meg so I will aim to fit the XTE-2005 and see how that goes.
I hate playing with the phone wires as you feel so cut off when you can't use the phone, internet etc, well I do anyway.

Judging by the back of my existing master socket there are black wires as well - any idea what they are? Lots of other wires as well.

My house has downstairs; the master socket, a double extension socket, a single extension socket and what appears to be another master socket, it looks the same as the one I have played with where the bottom half comes off and there is a test socket inside, that is upstairs in the bedroom.
Downstairs I have 1 phone plugged in on an extension lead (this is the main phone in the house) also plugged into that using a doubler is the Sky HD box, in the kitchen there is a DECT phone (no phone line)
Upstairs there is one phone plugged into the socket that looks like a master socket and 2 Sky+ boxes that are connected via extension cables.
      I think that is it!

I am sure that I will be back for help.

When you remove the faceplate make a note of what is connected to each terminal and fix them on the the new faceplate in the same order. Don't use exactly the same position on the wire to connect as before. Use a fresh section of the insulation to push into the connectors. Tuck any spare wires out of the way, making sure they are not touching any of the terminals.

Black cables are usually the external feed. It has possibly been replaced at some time and the original cable left in place. If it is not connected to anything now, just leave it as it is. Are you sure it is not connected to the AB terminals on the backplate?

Good question and sorry I do not know the answer. I have not seen any A / B terminals. It looked like the black cable was connected to IDC 1 but not 100% sure on that.

If you take out the other two screws out and remove the backplate you will see what is connected to the AB terminals. If all your extensions are working the black cable would not be connected to the faceplate.

Re: Been advised to seek help - So Help, please!

      hi all,
Well I have succesfully fitted the faceplate and have now been running for a few days.
      My results are currently:
      Download 4264
      Upload 442

      Sky pinger test gives me:
      System Up Time: 31:30:34

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 626381 1066333 0 0 0 31:29:44
      LAN 865193 547118 0 222 222 31:30:34
      WLAN 328878 151015 0 224 0 3:33:36
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5022 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 26.4 db
Noise Margin 4.1 db 13.1 db

Do you think I am at my maximum now?
It has been 10 days since I started with Sky BB and I have certainly had to unplug, reconnect a few times due to testing sockets etc.

I don't know if it is the weather or a fault on your line but your stats now are worse than before you fitted the faceplate. Can you remove it please and plug into the test socket using only the cable and filter supplied by Sky. This will establish whether your problem is internal or external.
