Not that happy with download speed. Any help appreciated.

A few weeks ago I switched from Virgin Broadband to Sky Broadband Unlimited.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't 20MB = 2.5MB per second download speed ?

      Anyway

I was getting 2.2MB download speed from Virgin, but I was just on a medium package so I only got that speed for so long then it dropped to 1.2MB.

The point is, I am now with Sky, only downloading at 650-700KB. Now I realise I have bought up to 20MB. But even so, I should be getting more. Over 1MB at least.

      Any suggestions ?

As you emphasise you are on an up to 20Mb package. This means you can get anything between 512kb and 20 Mb, depending on the length and condition of your line. Only a small percentage actually get 20 Mb on ADSL.

Post your stats from your normal position and from your Test socket if you have one, for a diagnosis. Use only the filter and ADSL cable supplied by Sky.

Okay, fair point and thanks for the reply. I still think I should be getting more than 650-700KB though, considering I have managed to get 2.2MB on virgin before.

      Okay

      Not test socket.

You should be at least double that at present, I take it you're not connected to your master socket?

How many other sockets do you have?
      Are they in use?
If so, are they all filtered?
If the Sky+ box is plugged in the phone line, does it have a filter on it?
Do you have a test socket?
If so, have you tried connecting to it?

Only one other socket is in use. Everything else is wireless via laptop. If that makes sense.

Just connected laptop to router via short Ethernet cable. Same 650KB download speed.

Do you have a test socket? If your master socket has a removable bottom half unscrew it and plug just a filter in and connect the router

See my PM and post your stats, with a photo of your socket.

the whole upto system being looked into by offcom as many many thousands of people have complained about this terrible use of upto speeds and the realistic speeds you then get.

The new guidelines say you need to state what speeds are on offer and what realistic speeds are you likely to get in your area.

ie if you buy 20 meg deal it should tell you in your area you looking to get 10 meg ect.

personally i on unlimited(had to upgrade no choice as they changed medium package) and ment to be getting 20 meg, realism i get 6-7meg....

virgin i belive the first company to put a complete guide on speeds in areas and other ISPs will have to follow suite if they wish to keep broadband customers.
